Is there a liquid Teflon somewhere

Post by BoomTown »

I’m needing to make me a new gasket for the lids of my stills. If there were a tube of Teflon caulking that dries in place, that would be excellent solution for me.

Anyone know of such a product?

That's what I used for mine and it's working quite well

This one has different sizes and thicknesses.

It's really nice and fat and relatively soft so when you initially clamp your lid down, it forms nicely to the body of your boiler and stays that shape.

That's adhesive-backed, right ? At the very least, I'd soak that in heads for a few days to remove the adhesive before use.

No. It “stretches” and will “stick” to itself. It’s “plumber’s tape”, used to “lubricate” pipe joints to allow them to be tightened without galling between the threads. No adhesive, just a soft, flexible teflon “tape”.

Boomtown - FYI: No need for this. Just wrap it around the edge of your boil pot, slightly stretching it tight. It’s tricky, no doubt. But, it can be done. This is exactly how I put the seal on my stock pot potstill.

The $42 one has a description of ...

Expanded PTFE sealant tape is a multi-purpose gasket tape manufactured from 100% expanded PTFE fluorocarbon material, supplied as a continuous low density tape with a self-adhesive backing strip.

The $37 one has a curiously worded usage statement ...

Usage method

Take a piece of tape of arbitrary length, paste it on the sealing surface (itself with glue) as long as the two ends overlap each other, you can form a gasket.

... because the "itself with glue" phrase seems to correlate with the expanded view showing a line of backing tape.

I have heard that expanded PTFE is OK as long as it's for a one off application. PTFE has little 'memory', so if you have a wonky lid to seal, you must position it exactly the same way every time, or use a new strip.
