Hello from WA

Post by Shavedwolf »

I am completely new to distilling, but have been a long time home brewer.

I have decided to build my first still and start a new hobby, I am looking forward to see what I can come up with and produce.

Thanks

Welcome Shavedwolf. What type of drink are you after? This will guide you toward the best still design. For flavored like whisky/rum/brandy a pot still is best. Vodka and gin are best suited reflux still. If it's all of the above, some designs suit both.

Mikey is 100% right. I've been here a short four months and made many fewer mistakes because I took the advice from these experts. And also because I read, read, read everything, and read again. Not only the new distiller sections, but many other sections as well. Enjoy.

Thanks all :)

I am mostly a Scotch drinker, I am currently making a LM still out of some 3" copper tubing and a 15 gal keg, though I realized today that I have the materials to make a pot still column/head, can just swap it out on my keg and make some whisky. So I am pretty excited about that now haha

Look at getting some ferrules to make your head modular. That way you can use the same column and switch heads easily. It'll be cheaper in the long run because if you end up like most of us, there WILL Be future builds.

Just did my CCVM modular. I can now just make a boka head if I choose later. Or cap it and run as a pot still for strip runs. Plenty options.

Greetings, Shavedwolf...

Yep... All of my components can be mixed and matched into a lot of different configurations... My next bit will be a few fittings soldered together for a CM configuration primarily using existing components... Going modular has many advantages...

Good luck, stay safe, and enjoy the journey...

Welcome to HD. I'm just getting started as well (just a couple stripping runs under my belt).

Not sure what your plans are for a still but I am very happy with the pot still I made. I used Samohon's column and liebig design with a 15.5gal keg boiler (propane for heat). It was easy to build and seemed like a great starting place with lots of potential for future modifications/upgrades. There is a ton of information to be found in all the stickies on the site and even more tidbits to be gained from all the random posts.

EDIT: I missed your post about the LM still. That is my next venture once I master my pot still.

GL with the reading and happy stillin'

Welcome from another Washington State distiller. From the dry side, the "right" side. Cool winters and warm summers, and very little rain. Works for me...

I like it dry

Too much rain makes my cookies all wet and crumbly.
