New from NZ

Post by Totallytaewa »

Hi all, new distiller from NZ. Am trying to learn all I can and the brain is exploding with all the new terms and information...BUT, man it feels good to stretch out the brain! My goal is to create the best tasting potato vodka I can as I have a big spud patch here, also have a brother who makes cider so am sidelining an apple brandy with him. Will be continuing with reading all I can, and no doubt asking all the dumb questions too...next step is purchasing some good gear to put the theory into practice...got a science and hort background so hoping it will be a potent mix!!

Welcome to Home Distiller......Purchasing the good gear is the right way to go, buy once cry once.
We see to many new folk buy cheap rubbish and then regret it.
My only other advice.....learn the craft / art side first...if you get serious you will be learning for the next 20 years....plenty of time for the science later.

Welcome to the forum . Alas , there won’t be too many success stories about making Vodka from spuds .

From what I’ve read , it’s a lot of work for little returns .
We had a craft distillery near me that is in one of the best spud growing areas in the country .

Lasted a few years but the cost of a bottle of his Spud Vodka was so high , no one could afford it.

I know you are not making it to sell , but there are easier ways to make a good Vodka than Spuds . Folk use Spuds when theres nothing else around…. Just say’n .

Welcome down the rabbit hole.

There are a few other countrymen here

What part of NZ are you in?
You can lead a horse to drink, but you cant make it water!
You can lead a horticulture but can you teach a prototype?

Plenty of good stillers close to you or over the hill in that windy place
