Hi from Loburn New Zealand

Post by Royalwulf »

My interest is making good quality rum. I am fussy with what rum I drink.
Very good rum is expensive here in NZ.

Bought a pot still, did a TPW for a sacrificial.
Then did a weetbix/bran wash. Distilled it twice but didn't like it that much.
Now looking at a different sugar wash to try, I want to practice a few times before i go for a rum.

I find it amazing that NZ is the only country where this is legal.
Anyway, thanks in advance for your help.

Find your local feed supplier and take a 20litre bucket, they should fill it with molasses for you.
Once you realise how easy a good molasses rum is you'll kick yourself for not doing it sooner.

Kiaora from up the top.

Welcome to the forum.

Depending on where you are, the hardest part of making your first rum can be finding a source of suitable molasses at a good price.

My second ferment was rum, it was fine. It wasn't equal to a ten year old, that comes much later, but it was an enjoyable drink.

UJSSM is quick and easy and can be enjoyed young and white if you get the cuts right. It's a good product to practice on.

Cheers

Welcome to HD .
Curious which Rums you have been enjoying .

Strongly suggest you get a barrel . My rum has always been ho hum until I started using a barrel to age it in . Takes it to another while level and as NZchris said , time is the secret . You can’t make a good Rum n less than 1-2 years , sure you can drink it , but it doesn’t develop into great Rum n less

Thanks MihiT and NZChris,
Molasses is not cheap.
I looked at this:
https://store.nzfarmsource.co.nz/catalo ... 5kg/213292
but it is not food grade and has sulphur in it
Thoughts on that?

Will a fill your own be better?

Yummyrum, thanks I was thinking it would take a long time. Must be hard at the start to put it away for a year or two, I suppose you sample as you go?
Can you use the barrel multiple times?

cheers

Forum protocol dictates I direct you to "tried and true" recipe section. Try pugirum or grandads, I think are the basic molasses rums.
I get my molasses for $1.60 ish/kg. 44gallon drum about 280kg.
Sampling along the way is just good practice, observing flavouring notes etc. :D
And of course you can drink it in the white.
Rum barrels are the most re-used, 6 or 8 times I think.
Aging in glass on oak staves is a lower-investment start point.

And many of them can grind it for a small fee too. No good if you want it for malting obviously but can buy a 50lb bag each way.

Feed available will generally be wheat; barley; corn/maize.
"Kibbled maize" would be the quickest and easiest to start you off, @OP.

That is cheap molasses. Is there any issues with using non feed grade molasses? The stuff i found had sulphur in it and have read that is an issue.

Please take questions to correct forum. Welcome to HD.

It's always the kiwi and aussie intros that go 15 post and need to be kicked out at last call

I have used that FIL stuff with no issues, not sure what the source is, likely all comes from the same place. Didn't notice any sulfur taste either in it raw or in the product.
Copper will generally take care of sulfides but if there was a notable odour to it then I'd try and find another source.
