IM BACK

Post by kristy123+ »

USED TO BE A MEMBER A FEW YEARS AGO. LOST TOUCH AND GOT AWAY FROM THE HOBBY FOR A WHILE. WHEN I WAS ONLINE BACK THEN WE WERE WORKING ON A STILL THAT WAS TOTALLY OFFSET. IN OTHER WORDS THE COLUMN CAME OF POT AND WENT DOWN TO A WTER SEPERATOR THEN BACK UP TO A REFLUX TYPE STILL. ANYONE REMEMBER THAT? MY MEMORY HAS FAILED ME AND IM LOOKING FOR ANYTHING CONCERNING THAT STILL.

ANY HELP WOULD BE APPRECIATED

Hey kristy
My language comprehension sucks , but if you were to draw a rough picture if what you are talking about , that might save a thousand words . My visual memory is much better .

Problem with that particular processes flow is that the thumper will eventually flood without a way to drain excessive liquid accumulation back to the primary kettle. And it will happen that much faster with higher reflux ratios.

Best to elevate the thumper and set up a drain back accommodation.
The concept works just fine and does allow for maximum column enrichment as more alcohol can be shifted into the rectifying section.
The trick is to size the thumper's liquid bed to have the capacity to hold all of the alcohol charge. So if we assume the primary kettle has a 30 liter fill capacity then the thumper should be sized to hold at least a 10 liter fill capacity. Doing so will delay any alchohol return back to the primary to only have to be flashed again in an ever increasing lower, remaining abv.

Does that make sense or did I prattle on too long?
