building a still out of SS 2 1/2 gallon fire extinguisher
Hello everyone! My name is Chris and I am new to distilling. I have not built a still yet, and I am in the beginning phase of designing my first still. I was wondering if anyone has used a 2 1/2 gallon stainless steel watercan (fire extinguisher) as the boiling chamber. I look forward to browsing this forum for ideas and appreciate your input. cj

I'm pretty sure I know the kind of extinguisher you're talking about, but those are tall & skinny. Most prefer a shorter and larger diameter boiler because it makes it more stable so it doesn't tend to fall over or require being secured so it can't fall over. You could make a boiler out of a cheap stainless steel pot with lid. You can easily solder the lid onto the pot as well as solder Tri-Clamp ferrules to it. I bought a used pot really cheap at a Salvation Army/consignment shop/junk shop.

I reckon you could put some plates in there and build a wicked column.

I keep one of those same pressurized water fire extinguishers near my air-tight wood stove, which I think is a much better use for it.
I don't think you'd have a whole lot of fun trying to clean that thing up after a run either, if it ever gets that far. Just sayin'.
