Are washes distilled with or without the (dead) yeast?
I have not read much about this anywhere online except for rum washes....
Industrially, when post fermentation washes are distilled, is there any attempt to devoid them of the dead yeast which must be undergoing autolysis by the time of distillation?
Is the sulfur (that is neutralized by the copper of the still) released by the dead yeast or during its fermentation?
Thank you
Stay Safe all!

Since you have done most of your reading elsewhere, start by reading what's available here by using the search engine at the top.. that way you will learn how to use the search, and become aware of the vast information available..perfection wrote: ↑Sun May 09, 2021 7:11 am I have not read much about this anywhere online except for rum washes....

The above link is bad ...... unless one is looking for:
1) Land Clearing Methods; or
2) Constructing Dust Barriers; or
3) Powder Paint Strippers
........?? ...... maybe it is my machine?

So, what i conclude is that it's a distillers decision after all with no black and while guidelines on it - and distilling without racking off the yeast would see 'some exciting nuances' in the resulting distillate or new make spirit caused by the congeners of the yeast autolysis .
So if you like it that way = you do it that way
Is that it?

The simple answer is .......leave as much as you can behind.....most will be sitting on the bottom of the fermenter after a few days to a week of inactivity.
If your the fussy type "Id suggests so" then go through all of the rigmarole of racking and cold crashing and what ever else tickles ya fancy.
Whether you can end up telling if one is better or worse.....or just different, will depend on about 101 different factors.

The yeast has fallen out of suspension and has formed a nice cake at the bottom . In this case , I’m making a neutral and its going to be stripped and run through a reflux still . I could have run it when it was cloudy . Makes bugger all difference in this case because the reflux still will clean it up .
But...
What is interesting is when I sipped the wash a few days ago it tasted less yeasty than it does to day, despite being much cloudier .
My recommended goto .

I ferment and distil in the same vessel. No racking or clearing. When it is done fermenting I crank up the heat and do the deed. It suits me but maybe not everyone.

A picture of your vessel/setup would be of assistance in development understanding of your process..
Experience indicate that it should not be done in such a manner..
