New pale malt whisky
Hello People.
I have not run my still for some 7 years. I looked back on here, and my last post was in 2013. Wow. A lot has happened in the meantime.
Heres my plan. I have ordered one of these oak barrels, 50 litres and plan to fill it with single pale malt whisky. It's going to be a replica of Scotch, but being in England, I suppose that it should be called whiskey.
I then intend to visit Fawcett Malts, and purchase their minimum quantity, which is 10 x 25kg of pre crushed pale malt.
Then the procedure will be as follows.
1. Mash
2. Ferment
3. Distill with pot still, removing foreshots
Repeat above, then do a spirit run with probably about two lots.
I was considering simply saving the middle third in the barrel, simply because I have no experience whatsoever making cuts.
Would this idea make the finished article too bland?
Kind Regards
ErnieV

Hello Ernie,
I'm in the same boat. Had a buddy gift me a new charred 53 half barrel. I havent made a run for about 5 years.
I think your plan is a good one. I'd make the cuts then put the feints into the next strip run. Other folks may have a better idea. Have fun and stay safe.

Simple Lil' Pot Still, no temp guage, no carbon, no scrubbers, nuthin' fancy. Sometimes use a thumper, sometimes don't.

8Ball just posted something interesting regarding the cuts and use of feints for a scotch process in another thread you might find of interest in your journey. Check out the "Recycling heads and tails (feints)" thread. I found it interesting.

Long story, last distilled back in 2013, got diagnosed with colorectal cancer in 2014, had surgery last year, and have been given the all clear. Now retired, got fed up with just gardening. So, have purchased a 50L barrel and am going to "fill her up"!

ErnieV,
Glad to hear you've been given the all clear. I definitely understand the boredom.
