Does distilling smell?

Just wanted to know if mash gives off alot of smell when im distilling it. I live in apt and i have a 1 gallon worth of mash i want to distill, but i don't want it to stink up the place too bad.

If it smells too much, you've got a problem somewhere, going too fast, a hole, not enough condensation, something.

I typically do 5 gallon runs and I'm in a 900 square foot apartment. There is a definate smell to distilling, although its not really an unpleasant smell. Opening a window a little bit helps a lot.

Well, okay thanks. I was talking to some dude awhile back and he was telling me distilling smells like shit or worse.

Oh yeah, on a side question; could i ferment waffle syrup?

Its not the distilling that smells its when you open the boiler afterwards.
