Wont kill yeast, but ferment will be slow if the volume is small enough to drop the temp towards ambient. Insulate the fermenter.

Depends on the yeast. Many lager yeasts perform reasonably well down to 45F. Below that temp yeast metabolism seems to slow to a crawl and crap out. Many a whiskey gets fermented with ale yeasts that prefer warmer (50F - 72F) temps. Check the spec sheet on your yeast for it’s preferred temp range.

As mentioned, some lagers will be able to ferment but very slowly (I don't think it's suitable for distillation) while a yeast Ale I believe falls asleep but you can wake him up by increasing the temperature ... if you don't have a heating source you put on the blanket around the fermenter.
