Stripping rum run

Many like to post about a first successful ferment (or first all grain mash), or first still built/bought or first good run of the still. Tell us about all of these great times here.
Pics are VERY welcome, we drool over pretty copper 8)

Stripping rum run

Post by MementoMori »

So my stripping run took like 7.5hrs once the parrot got below 20%abv I cut power. I learned a lot for sure. Cooling water needs to be figured out. I kept on draining my 55g barrel and filling it with cold water multiple times. I might use my glycol chiller to make a recirculating system to save water.

Someone told me I should have filtered my distillate as it comes off the parrot. Is that needed on a stripping run and a spirit run. I'm worried it will take away flavor.

I would never do that, but I like a full flavor rum.

Did you save any of the wash?
If yes you can add that to your low wines for your final run, that will add flavor as well.

I have a quart jar of wash and lots of dunder. I'm making a dunder barrel for multi generations.

How much volume? What type of heat?

7.5 hours seems long for a strip. The faster you strip, the more flavor can carry over.

Adding wash to your low wines after stripping for your spirit run is a flavor bomb.
Referred generally as a 1.5 run, it can produce a richer rum than just doing the spirit run on the stripped run by itself.
Then you figure out your keep and age it appropriately.

This said without knowing anything at all about your recipe, your protocol, really anything at all so please take my advice with a healthy dose of salt.

7.5 hours seems an awefully long time for a strip.
How big was the boiler charge.

My boiler charge was ..... gallons, I checked it today and I got ... gallons at 42%abv. Sounds great to me. I'm using 2x 5500w elements on 50 amps.
