parent site

Post by Pikluk »

i really think the parent site should be updated.(i know its been made from someone who is not here anymore,
but its time i think, maybe put the stuff we remove/change be putted in a vintage/museum section)
and yes its a safety issue.
lots of plastic tubing and seal used in there...
also lots of proven to be ineffective still designs/pictures

nobody on this forum would recommend this... (either because of plastic or simply outdated desing)
http://homedistiller.org/image/stillmaker.gif" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;" rel="nofollow
http://homedistiller.org/image/pvb-glasscondenser.jpg" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;" rel="nofollow
http://homedistiller.org/image/pvb-glasscondenser.jpg" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;" rel="nofollow (that one look really unsafe)
http://homedistiller.org/image/pilch_keg.jpg" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;" rel="nofollow

http://homedistiller.org/image/duplast_reflux.jpg" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;" rel="nofollow

that was only a quick scan of the still photo section...im sure im missed a few other bad stuff

and if you go tru the recepie section... tried tru not really

and i see a few people telling newb to go read the parent site, even tho there a lot of good stuff and theories on its just not the same mentality the evolved from this forum.

i personally read a lot of stuff from here and there before i ended on this forum and i had a lot of wrong ideas that you guys helped me with.(the best reflux design on the parent sit is the off set nixon(not that bad but bakacob made a way cheaper and easier mod with the slant plate, not counting that VM is probably better"non of that on the parent site"))
on design, material, principle and basically most of my thought(on distillation :) ) where reshaped after i read for a few weeks on this forum.

i knew a bit about distillation before i started, like stuff goes in gas form and temperature for different substance.
so i was looking for a still design browsing tru multiple site and stuff ... almost made one those still with a cooling tub troughs the bottom of the column.

anyway all that to say that the parent site should be update or at least corrected and remove the bad stuff from it.

i just think that if the goal of this forum is the guide people we should either fix that or remove it.

Agree.
But two problems with doing it. Fair bit of work, and the parent site actually belongs to Tony Ackland, and we cannot change it without his permission.

Be discreet.
And have fun.

I sort of agree, but strongly disagree that it should be removed. The parent site has a great deal of very useful theory for a new distiller to read and hopefully digest. Then when they come to the forum to ask/discuss aspects they at least have some of the basics sorted out. I shudder to think about some of the questions that would/are asked without Tony's site being read, old as it is.

However, I'm only a pot stiller but can understand pickluk's concern about reflux stills, however anyone reading the forum should - after reading the parent site - again have gleaned enough information to ask intelligent questions.

i never meant to remove the whole site there's lots and lots of good stuff there,
Tony Ackland did a really good job with the site with the data available at the time.
i just mean it need some editing, remove the bad stuff or even not remove but move in a different section.

at least since you guys are like "there's no way we ever gonna say plastic is ok in a still" remove the bad designed picture of still's.

by the way hook yes its some work but there's not that much stuff that need removal/replacing.
we got plenty of good picture on the forum and text that goes with them, if we want to replace some.
its a fairly old site and basic html coding, i volunteer to help if wanted if only to gather data and double check stuff.

and about the fact the the site belong to Tony, it would not exist anymore if it wasn't for uncle jesse.
on the title page there could be by Tony Ackland in big font and edited by **** in small font.
could keep a original copy of the site in a different section.

or maybe we could simply ask Tony if he mind?

This has been discussed a few times. It's mainly a copyright issue. Wish we could get Tony to approve some changes there, or get involved in it again to make the updates.
It is the very things that we think we know, that keep us from learning what we should know.
