How NOT to char wood . . .
1. put sticks on a tray under the grill at 200 c
2. leave said sticks there till you notice smoke coming out of the oven
3. open the oven supplying sticks with oxygen and making them catch fire.
4. quickly close the oven and turn off the grill
5. lave oven to cool for ten min then open the door getting a face full of smoke and dump water on the dead black charcoal you now have
6. try and calm down and appease the dear girlfriend sitting on the couch
7. open windows and doors to clear the smoke now throughout the house.
see - its EASY
And all because i didnt want to shell out for a propane torch

Try it on the BBQ outside. Works real good and you keep the girlfriend a lot happer
The other thing is if you want good charcoal, heat it in foil or better still an old cookie tin with a tight fitting lid. Charcoal is usually made in the absence of O2.

I don't mean to laugh but I could only imagine what a boondoggle scene it was. The people who live with us distilling types have to put up with a lot

Well, if the girlfriend would have gotten off of the couch, and checked on the oven, there wouldn't have been a fire in the first place.
Or not...

Re: How NOT to char wood . . .
Ah, its all good.
I had toasted some chips in foil just fine - no colour on them - just a loverly sweet smell.
Then as i read more i came to the conclusion that i realy need char'd sticks - wasn't AIMING for charcoal
Am i right in thinking that the aim is to singe the out side of the stick blackish while the inside would still be 'woody' if broken?

Re: How NOT to char wood . . .
That would be correct. Some have said that less char gives more color and others believe that a deep char will yield better results. For the bourbon type drink, I like to toast mine in the oven first, wrapped in tinfoil with pin pricks. Then I hit it with the propane torch pretty hard and deep. For other stuff, I just toast. Good luck.Am i right in thinking that the aim is to singe the out side of the stick blackish while the inside would still be 'woody' if broken?

Re: How NOT to char wood . . .
Right. Had another shot while the GF was out at uni - managed a light char on the alder and pecan - the heat didnt seem to do much to the manuka though - might re treat it. No smoke through the house this time - just a sweet grassy - earthy - woody smell

Re: How NOT to char wood . . .
This is really straying from the topic but Bull you started it. Before I got married as we were planning our vows my wife said I do not want obey in the vows as in "Honor and Obey". We were in a Basket and Robbins ice cream place and I had a glass of water that was empty so I asked my wife to be to fill it at the water fountain. She dutifully got up and filled the bottle and when she turned I said ok we don't need the word obey in the vows!

Dude you did that in the kitchen.
