Great Northern White Beans??

Post by distiller_dresden »

Hi y'all?

I am making a batch of my ham and bean soup with a big old ham bone left over from Christmas, I soaked a couple of bags of Great Northern overnight. I used the beans I need.

I have about, I don't know, 4 lbs of beans left that have soaked and absorbed up water overnight. Anybody ever made or is it possible to make any mash from beans? Not sure what to do with them otherwise, I don't think I can freeze them or anything...

I haven't tried this idea yet
Maybe use the beans for nutrients in a sugar wash

That was my thought; just wondering if it's even possible.

I mean, they are, hypothetically, just like corn, or potatoes, or any other 'starch' right? FULL of starch, i.e. sugar? I'm wondering if anyone has tried it, or if any home scientists knew if maybe they are a special case, like how with garbanzo beans they are a special protein that needs to be mixed with something else to be complete. If something needs to be added to make the beans 'open' for the yeast or else they wouldn't be digestible? I can't be the only person who has ever thought to use white beans.

well I'll be...

Here's some talks about beans. Couldn't find where anyone really tried it though.
Like shadylane says, maybe just use as yeast nutrient. Might stink you out of the house otherwise!

I would make a nice white bean spread out of them with a little seasoning for toast or crackers, so you have munchies while stilling.
