Burnt my first rye

Post by telefonica »

Followed UJ's rye recipe with 100% malted rye. Fermented mine on the grain, racked, then filtered through cheesecloths ~5 times until there was no more residue. Poured into the still, then diluted with 2 gallons of water bringing the total to ~12 gals. I still managed to burn it, badly.

Didn't add any enzymes to help with liquification. Maybe I should've?

Any other pointers to prevent this next time? I'll probably ferment off the grain next.

Rye can be a beast.
Stirring while coming up to temp is the only other thing I can think of to help you out.
It can be done, keep at it.

Thanks for all of the help, guys. Looks like I'm going to have to buy a new heating element and possibly do another vinegar and sacrificial run.

My heating element is just pure black. It didn't burn a solid chunk, it just looks like the rye soup was too much and burned on the element.

I e cooked rye with gas, never an element.
Do you have one of those ultra low watt density elements?
Rye just seems to want to scorch unless you can trick it somehow.

Interesting, I may have to do that.

No, I have a 5.5kW element. I typically get up to boil at or near maximum power before turning down to ~2kW for the run.

Do other grains act the same way? Wheat? Corn?

Other grains? Not in my experience. But it might not be a problem even with rye if you used the lower power setting for the element from the getgo - at the cost of taking longer for a run, of course.

Any other users with internal electric elements have experience they can share? Is 1.5kW too high? 2kW?
