Viking Malt

Post by JellybeanCorncob »

Hey:
I just bought a bag of Viking Malt Pale Ale at my brew shop.
030B9F67-C4FD-4E3C-BD2F-331C70E6796A.jpeg
It’s made in Poland and the price was great. $32 US for a 55lb bag. For the price it’s worth a try. Has any one here used it for a single malt, or in any type of whiskey? I’ll be ’smoking most of the grains for a heavily peaked malt whiskey.
Thanks

That's really good. I've been pleased with morebeer.com at 79centers per pound (in 10lb bags) with free 1 day shipping, but that's better

If you buy two of the 55 LB bags then shipping is free.
$76 for 110 Lbs ain't bad!

Oh. I forgot. More beer was also having a 15% off sale, free beer, dogs and burgers. You can’t beat that. So the malt price is a few bucks more regularly. Still a good price. I hope it has good conversion. I’ll taste the beer to see how the flavor is, but time will tell. A year in the shed then we’ll see?

Brewing supply sells 2 row for $39 / 55Lbs.
I like supporting the local folks, but the deal above is tempting.

Is there a promo code for that? I just tried ordering 2 bags and they want $30 for shipping

It's possible that I was mistaken.
Reading this page leads you to believe the shipping is free if the order is over $59.

But the details are what will get you, if it ships "freight" then you get charged.

Really for what the rate was I can't get it that cheap at my LHBS. Besides, their base malt is stale.

Is this the null-LOX malt that doesn't have the enzyme lipoxygenase? I've been hearing commercials saying it some how doesn't create the "cardboard" flavor. I find the cardboard flavor as one of the first off flavors in my tails. Did you find this to increase your hearts at all?

Viking Null-LOX malt

Post by KCFD450 »

So, I've been hearing commercials on a brewing podcast about Viking malt that does not contain the enzyme lipoxygenase. From what I understand, this enzyme causes Trans-2-nonenal, which is smelled/tasted as "cardboard" flavors. Has anyone tried this malt and noticed a difference in hearts /tails cuts. I find the cardboard flavor to be heavy in my tails and was wondering how this malt would affect my runs.

I use it when making a pilsner but when making whisky I prefer their 2 row pale ale malt.
