a few beginner questions

First, where should my thermometer be placed? In some different pictures on here I have seen them inserted into the pot itself. On others I have seen it attached to tube coming out of the pot. Just wondering exactly where you are taking the temp from. Also wondering what is a liebeg?

In fairness to Brand New Unit 2012, this is a better search portal, because you can do phrase specific searches in it, but you can't with the standard forum search portal you linked to.
