Kmart cracked corn bird feed is it ok?

Post by nubz69 »

I was at kmart today and saw that they sell cracked corn for 2.99 for a 5 pound bag. It says on the bag not fit for human consumption but I didn't see any labels on the bag to suggest the corn was treated in any way. Do you guys think this is ok to use?

I'd say it would be O.K. The line "not fit for human consumption" is there so they don't have to follow/pass all the heath regs that are normally required IOT manufacture food.

I gotta say it or I'm gonna bust...I think it's for the birds.
15 gallon pot still, 2"x18" column with liebeg condensor on propane.
Modified Charles 803 w/ 50gal boiler, never ran so far.

As mentioned about the additives. I bought some "pet/bird food" cracked corn
which looked fine, etc., As it turns out...it smelled like plastic and dirt and was very dirty corn. Even still, it will work "fine" for UJSM.—I just wouldn't cook it or use it for any all-grain recipe unless you clean/wash it first.

That is pretty expensive. Go to a feed store and get 10 times that weight for 10 to 13 dollars.

I may try ujsm some time soon and buy a bag. i know I can get more at a feed store but there isn't one that close so once i factor in gas I might as well just buy this. Its also nice to know that I have cracked corn so close to me.

I bought a 55lb bag of cracked corn for $10.50 at a C0-oP in Nova Scotia.
Yes it is full of corncob bits and crap but it seems to be fermenting fine.
Numerous 57L kegs, some propane, one 220v electric with stilldragon controller. Keggle for all-Grain, two pot still tops for whisky, a 3" reflux with deflag for vodka. Coming up, a 4" perf plate column. Life is short, make whisky and drag race!

the agway here sells 50 lbs for 8 bucks and 100lbs for 14

can get cracked or full corn. theres no garbage in it just corn, and no worries about wierd chemicals as its designed for eating.

so you basically get like years worth for the price of a little tiny bag full of chemicals from the bird shop

Farmers co-ops, horse feed stores, larger pet stores, stock feed suppliers.

Are you in a city or a small town or the bush?

I actually buy mine straight from the seed graders, you'd have to get it onfarm to cut out any more middle men.
