Cattail Mash Recipes Needed
Could someone please tell me the best recipe for Cattail Vodka please.
I've read on survival sites cattails have 5 times the starch by weight compared to potatoes. I was thinking thats a lot of cheap sugar thats easy to get to. I've also heard tails of old moonshiners using cattails for early season runs before the corn was ready to increase thier yearly output.

Not sure if it would be worthwhile... (but curious if sometime else has experience):

I'll be watching this thread, as there are tons of cattails right nearby!

There haven't been much discussed on cattails -- the idea has been around awhile just never seemed to get traction.

I'm assuming we are talking about the stalk or shoot. Before the seed pod forms? And not the root? That's just what I got from reading the link given earlier. And what would be good to use for the conversion? Powdered enzymes or something else high in enzymes?Dnderhead wrote:did a bit of research, you need to clean ,grind, cook then convert, much like potatoes.

The fuel guys macerate the stalks and rhizomes, steam or boil and use chemical enzymes. Cattails are used to clean up polluted water, so you should probably be particular about where they grow- might get some extra goodies.

the roots are used, the tender stalks can be used for greens but not as much starch.
the easy way i found to clean such things is a tumbler like a mud mixer, put the roots in
with a slurry of sand (Poland/masons)and water, tumble ,the sand will "scrub " off the dirt and "skins"
then rinse.

Very interesting. I'm curious of what the flavors would be?
And good point on the extras they would suck up.

The stalk juice is supposed to be high in complex sugars. FYI, I read about the rhizomes wearing out wood chippers trying to cut them up! Sugar beet factories (which, unfortunately, I know) have cutters that would probably do rocks, but they might be a little big... I like the tumble in sand idea.
