L A N as nutrient
Please see if this makes sense
In South Africa we get a fertilizer called LAN. It is Lime ammonium Nitrate
Below is a description of it
LAN (28) is available in a granular form. The product contains 28% nitrogen of which 50% as ammonium-N and 50% as nitrate-N. In addition LAN (28) contains 20% Dolomitic lime resulting in about 4.1% Ca and 2.1% Mg in the product. Both ammonium and nitrate are readily available for plant uptake.
My idea is to use it as a nutrient, because of the nitrogen level and the lime will act as a buffer to keep the pH higher.
Thoughts please.

You lucky bastard . Probably works a treat . No chance the rest of the western world is ever going to get access to Ammonium Nitrate ever again ...: well not without paying extortionat prices for minuscule amounts and having to fill out a mega shit ton of paper work
My recommended goto .

And the Mg helps the yeast to multiply too.
We used to have a similar fertilizer, but it comes in 50 kg bags. Do not know if we still can buy it, though.

Ammonium Nitrate is available in small quantities in the US in the form of Tannerite. A 2 part mix of a binary explosive used in target practice. Just don't mix in the aluminum powder, and you have a clean jar of ammonium nitrate.
But! Before you guys go running out to buy tannerite to nourish your yeasties, its 85% Ammonium Nitrate and 15% Ammonium Perchlorate. I have no idea if Ammonium Perchlorate is healthy or not.

Not the 1st person I've heard contemplating just this, but at what dosage?Moggy wrote: ↑Thu Dec 10, 2020 1:33 am Please see if this makes sense

I am thinking of using the same dosage as DAP.AdamS wrote: ↑Thu Dec 10, 2020 10:56 amNot the 1st person I've heard contemplating just this, but at what dosage?Moggy wrote: ↑Thu Dec 10, 2020 1:33 am Please see if this makes sense

Sorry for the intermittent replies, I am in Northern Mozambique with so so coverage.
Re: L A N as nutrient
I bought some LAN and the nitrogen content is 17%.
DAP is 18%, so the dosage should be the same.
I will put a batch in to test, before I Mobilize again to Mozambique.

Man, I hope you stay safe in North with the war and all
Re: L A N as nutrient
Everyone has been evacuated from the site, so I acn put another batch on.
Making two batches of Rum.
It looks like the LAN is working. I have never had this type of vigorous bubbling coming from my water trap. It is going wild.

Hi Moggy
I see your location is from the Friendly City
May I dare ask, where did you buy the LAN?

I am in the Friendly city
LAN is available at Builders, in the gardening section.
I am a bit disappointed with the LAN, because it does not dissolve completely.
If you need nutrients, I have today received 5kg of DAP and some Fermentis SAFspirit C70
If you are in PE, you are welcome to give me a shout and if you are in another location, I will give you the name of the place to get some.
The DAP is really not expensive.
