Rotten Apple Pie

Post by ELT »

I found a long forgotten (4-5 years) jar of Apple Pie in the back of my garage refrigerator. The ingredients (except the cinnamon stick) have completely broken down as indicated in the included picture (after a solid shake). The lid gave a good POP when I finally got it to move with a strap wrench...

What are the thoughts if I let it settle and pour off the clean liquid? I'm thinking not much can grow in 80 proof liquid...

Personally I think I would call that one a loss

Let it settle strain it and try it. Might be great with all that age.
I wouldn't dump it without at least trying it.
Let us know how it was.

Hell the worst it can do is kill me! I know it has no wood alcohol in it so doubtful on that one... Amazing how them apple pieces broke down to look like that after a few years at 35 degrees.

Let it settle, strain it, and give it a whirl. Worst it could do is taste bad. Nothing's living in 80 proof, so you don't have to worry about it spoiling. Let us know how it tastes (I personally would have tasted it off the bat).

Cheers! :)

80 proof doesn't even come close to guaranteeing no bacteria. Id be dumping that nasty looking stuff if it were mine.

I am not sure if I would taste it but I would run it threw a coffee filter or a napkin and then let it settle if you do. I think the cinnamon is gonna be nasty. I might be wrong. I am thinkin redistill it without all the nasty in it.

That is true but if any such bacteria was currently present then, (if the stuff has been sealed for 4-5 years), it would have to have been present form the start.

Is the top bulging outwards?? The one pic looks like a bulge outwards of the canning lid.

Big Red Flag.

At your own risk - or get your little brother or perhaps a brother-in-law to try it.

No the top is not bulging outwards (that would be a sign of botulism). What you are seeing is damage on the lid from opening it with a large pair of channel locks (redneck strap wrench). The top was fully sealed after sitting for 4 years - it popped quite loud when I pried it up so there was a full vacuum. That I'm not sure how happened (must have been from the temperature change when the jar lid was sealed at room temp). Ran out of coffee filters so haven't filtered this gem just yet. smells completely normal, though.

Let it settle and give a sniff. Trust your nose.
I bet it's fine.

I had some Cuban Guyabita/Rum that had fruit in it for 30 years and was incredible.

Its probably fine, I mean I guess you could take a sample to a lab and ask them to test if for toxins, but at the point of doing that I think the toxins will be the least of your worries after explaining what it is, so the second best thing is to just try it. Let your nose lead you, but I would be shocked if it isn't just as good as when you bottled it. Think of it like canning applesauce, if the lid isn't pressed up(like some of mine did this year) then it will be good to go. If it were a jar of applesauce I doubt you or anyone would hesitate at trying it. Its not much different, and while 80% wont kill EVERYTHING, it should produce a very toxic environment for any nasties to grow in.

Shit, I'd have drank the hell out of that. I bet its fine. If you saw Piss's dunder pit, you'd think that apple pie looked like a model of sanitary food preparation standards.

You see the shitpile they ferment up and distill for palinka? Look at 2:20 in this video. Guy grunts from the smell when they pour it in. HA! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=arHUmaVcdAo" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;" rel="nofollow

Medical isopropyl is 70%. Just thought I'd throw that in.
