I've never been a fan of apple pie, in my personal opinion (that's just me) it is a waste of good whiskey. I usually have 3 fingers, neat, of my wheated bourbon just before bed; the other week I poured my drink and spied an apple in the fridge and said why not. Munched that apple while sipping my whiskey and it was fine, my kind of apple pie. Since then I have paired my whiskey with an apple several times... a apple a day.......
