Oak worktop for aging
Hi chaps, so I have quite a few off cuts off an oak worktop we bought. It looks to be stained but very much original looking below the stain, thinking I may be able to sand it down and use for aging...once toasted and charred etc. Any thoughts? I really don't know if it's been treated.

I live in the UK so guessing English oak not American. Flavour profile = nice cup of tea and fish and chips!

Chances are it's raw is slim. I wouldn't use it. Rather find a timber supplier or something like a masonry/joinery and ask them for RAW oak. They sometimes have. That's where I got most of mine.

Yeah , I hear you . Fitted an Ikea kitchen quite a few years ago . Had Oak bench tops, they smelt amazing
Had to cut out big holes for sink . Ummed and arrrred and asked on forum but in the end decided no .
Mine was chunks of Oak about 2” glued ( laminated) and oiled .
I thought about cutting out the glue and planing off the oiled layers ... in the end I called it .
Game out . Not going there .

There are some impregnating people for wood that do not leave a trace of the naked eye so you can't determine if they have been treated, I would avoid using them unless you have some information from the manufacturer. With regard to the comment on the oak, I use pieces of natural oak that I find locally and even if it is not American has a fantastic aroma.

Moved the topic from the Welcome Center to Flavoring and Aging makes threads easier to find in search if they are in the right topic area. Carry On!

Really appreciate your feedback guys. Gonna just use the off cuts for benches and stands I reckon. Just bought a nice big shed for dedicated distillery so gonna need some work surfaces. Bushman I'm very new to all this forum malarkey. Would I piggy back off another post in a topic search?. Sorry for my complete ignorance!

You can piggy back or start a new one. Either works. If you start a new one, just look for the best fitting sub forum to post it.

How do I start a new one? Again sorry for my gross incompetence I just can't seem to find a new post option other than in the welcome centre!
