Sugar wash smell like eggs
Hi I have a problem with my sugar wash I prepared it like always 39L + 11kg of sugar and turbo yeast brand what I always use anyway today I noticed it's finished fermenting so I decided to give it a stir after that I noticed there's quite big piece of cardboard probably my son threw it there ... After a stir i noticed there's slight smell of eggs is it alright to distill it or throw it to the toilet ?
Re: Sugar wash smell like eggs
my only worry would be any glue used to make the cardboard. But i doubt I would worry that much. The egg is probably some sulfur compounds. Certain yeast strain make that naturally, others do if a bit stressed. I would not worry about that part, especially if you have copper in your still as the copper removes the sulfur compounds.

By chance is your still made of stainless steel?
There's a little-known phenomenon known as turbo yeast palette syndrome that is caused by repeated ingestion of spirits made with this yeast. Unfortunately, the symptoms go beyond a heightened sensitivity to sulfurous compounds (I think you're at this point) and headaches/achy joints. The telltale result of distilling with turbo yeast is, sad to say, ED, at least temporarily. Discontinuing using said turbo yeast is your best bet at reversing the most serious symptoms of this terrible affliction, that and upgrading to a copper riser and stillhead, (upward vapor path) a cocksure method of introducing copper porn to your distillery).

The last I looked the eco-friendly glue used to bond corrugated sheets is largely made from either corn, wheat or rice starch.

The only wash I've had that smelt like rotten eggs, I fixed by placing pieces of copper in the fermenter. 24 hrs later it was barely detectable and because my still has copper in the right places, it turned out fine.

I hang my oyster shell sack from a stand of 14g copper wire.SaltyStaves wrote: ↑Fri Jun 11, 2021 9:12 pm The only wash I've had that smelt like rotten eggs, I fixed by placing pieces of copper in the fermenter. 24 hrs later it was barely detectable and because my still has copper in the right places, it turned out fine.

The surface area of that wire wouldn't do anything in the case of a rotten egg wash. Its also a post-fermentation treatment, rather than during.Deplorable wrote: ↑Fri Jun 11, 2021 9:17 pm I hang my oyster shell sack from a stand of 14g copper wire.

Hmmm. Worked for me on a SSS ferment. Must have been a fluke. I swapped the SS wire that hung my shell sack for the coiled copper wire from my unused liebig when the wash got stinky 24 hours in. By the time it finished it was fine.

I haven't had that problem myself, but this thread might help anyone that has it; https://homedistiller.org/forum/viewtop ... =1&t=63358SaltyStaves wrote: ↑Fri Jun 11, 2021 9:12 pm The only wash I've had that smelt like rotten eggs, I fixed by placing pieces of copper in the fermenter. 24 hrs later it was barely detectable and because my still has copper in the right places, it turned out fine.

I have encountered sulfur a couple times, mainly wine making when my novice ass has stressed the yeast. Aeration (followed by metabisulphite) and time soved that. Did try siphoning past some copper, not sure if that helped it or not.
I also have a wine that was introduced to a roll of painters tape for about 24 hours a month ago, so far no ill effects.

Re: Sugar wash smell like eggs
It's lot easier to put Potassium metabisulfite into a wash than it is to get the stink of it out when distilling, so I suggest you don't use it for anything to be distilled.Spark_Farmer wrote: ↑Thu Jun 17, 2021 1:29 pm Aeration (followed by metabisulphite) and time soved that.
