I see both sides of this. Yes, to make it from scratch allows total control. On the other hand, a lot of time energy and money gets spent that could be used on marketing and shall we say the creative side of the recipe development.
If in doubt leave it out.

Just read this - plays into a discussion with a good mate who is firmly of the opinion that only the shady bunch use bought base spirits. I have sent him the link - discussion closed! :D

If I was to ever move from hobby to commercial , the last place I would want to be is in the gin market......way to much competition and sooner or later its gunna crash. I would however cash in in the current craze....but I wouldn't bet my future on it.
The smart ones are out there sticking aside Rums and Whiskies to age and mature while they survive on Gin sales.
The crazy side of that ..or in my mind, is that there are many other products that are just as easy to make as GIn......those things are also very saleable products if you are were to market them in a "artisan way".
