Good article thanks!

Then there’s the small batch craft bourbons we make which is largely made of unobtanium. Not only the best but so very exclusive!

Cheers,
jonny

Yep, I ain't paying PVW prices when I can strive to make something better for what amounts to pocket change in comparison to the cost of a single pour of PVW 25y/o. Hell, the hipsters, barrel buyers, and Hollyweird have made some bourbons practically impossible to find.
For about a hundred and fifty bucks worth of grain and yeast, and a whole lot of time, a guy with some ambition, and reading comprehension can make a 5 gallon barrel of his very own craft spirit.(or at least I hope I can)

I get what your saying but I think the evolution and history of alcohol is both interesting and important. I realize that some of those prices listed were ridiculous.

For sure. thought it was a great read and hit a few good highlights about things that are driving hysterical bottle prices. If people want to pay them prices, more power to 'em. I'd rather seek out local small distilleries like Skunk Brothers, Pursuit, Westland, Sidetrack,or XO Alambic, and see what they're making, and buy a bottle or two to support a local business, than line the pockets of some 2nd market reseller of someone elses product. New history is being made in the craft.

Only hoping that my son finds some of my barrels many years after I'm gone and gets to enjoy them.

Stay safe

Thanks. I have been trying to look for bourbon I never heard of coming from the actual producers. I'll double my efforts to watch out for bottles that just added a sticker.

Interesting read.

I always get a laugh out of the "distinctive product" BS. Nice laws to enrich a few, in the name of cultural protection. Clearly didn't make the product better *cough* MGP *cough*.

Shoot even some sub $30 bottles are getting hard to acquire.
Liquor stores in my area only get one or two bottles of Eagle Rare for example.

I happen to agree with the law to only use new, never used, white oak barrels...the law makers must have read the history and got the willies as well, just the thought of using used fish barrel...charred of not, that is a revolting thought.

1790s: Bourbon Accidentally Get Barrel Aged

Many claim that a Bourbon County pastor and distiller named Elijah Craig was the first to figure out that the cheapest storage method was to clean a fish barrel by burning the inside of it, then add the whiskey to it.

i don't think it's a joke...what if Pastor Craig had found free barrels that had held rotting Buffalo Apples...he would have figured out a way to use them also !

Fish smell is one of those hard to clean smells, I doubt even fire would be effective given what we know of wood absorption. Ergo I call bull on that one. Fun tale though

OK a Buffalo Turd in a bottle of whiskey would be better than most of those images...
