Horseradish Schnapps
You need fresh horseradish root for this liquor. Jarred prepared horseradish is too finely grated, which tends to make the spirit overly cloudy. It also contains trace amounts of vinegar, oil, and salt, which would affect the clean, clear flavor.
Whole horseradish root has practically no aroma, but when it is grated, the broken cells produce mustard oil (horseradish and mustard belong to the same botanical family), which irritates your mucous membranes. The membranes weep to rid your system of the irritating oil, producing a cleansing effect throughout your skull. That effect, though moderately painful, is wonderfully refreshing.
Makes 1 pint
Ingredients
1 fifth (750 ml/31/4 cups) vodka (80-100 proof)
11/2 cups coarsely shredded fresh horseradish root
Instructions
1. Combine the vodka and horseradish in a half-gallon jar. Stir to moisten the horseradish.
2. Seal the jar and put it in a cool, dark cabinet until the liquid smells and tastes strongly of horseradish, 2 to 4 hours.
3. Strain the mixture with a mesh strainer lined with several layers of dampened cheesecloth into a clean quart jar. Do not push on the solids to extract more liquid.
4. Seal and store in a cool, dark cabinet. Use within 1 year.

Note: The liqueur will precipitate small bits of horseradish as it sits. These are not harmful, but you might find them unattractive. Obviously this is the vodka of choice for Bloody Marys. Also makes a lethal shooter.

They say horseradish is an ingredient of the Friesian liqueur Beerenburg, but that of course is a secret.
It is also said it causes a hard hangover, but I doubt if you can drink enough of your schnapps to get a real hangover.

I think I'm gonna give this a try, sure looks easy enough.

And perfect timing. I just stopped by the store and they said the will start getting fresh horseradish for the Thanksgiving shoppers in about 2 weeks.

I'm not a huge bloody mary guy but I have some friends who are and this might make an interesting bottle to have around for the holidays.

Boy now this stuff would make a killer base for a cold symptom relief mixture. Add ginger, mint, osha root maybe some wild cherry bark and some raw honey. It'd taste something awful but it'd clear you out and ease that scratchy sore throat better than most commercial products. Whew, sounds like a fire ball straight through your sinuses!

I had this a few years ago when we visited Russia. Wasn’t bad - it helped that I like horseradish to begin with! Might have to try it.

I ran into a small distillery in Maine this summer that had a version of this.
I think the place was called Split Rock, and they had a horseradish infused vodka.
I don't remember it having any heat, but a nice subtle horseradish flavor, not over the top, was even good as a sipper.

I'm from Russia, We drink horseradish tinctures and some more things traditional recipe - "Хреновуха" (Hrenovuha). But usually it is just for health. Pretty good thing as you get cold, blows away running nose and cough, if they have just started. But tastes as the hell.
However my grandpa liked it very much, and some people living in country, where they have a lot of physical job outside in cold weather (7-9 months per year, it is Russia, man).
Anyway try it. But it is terrible to drink it, while it is hot.

Update, to soften the taste - traditionally used a little of honey, mustard, or lemon juice.

My dad would like this
Growing up we used to grow Horseradish
Come harvest he would eat them fresh out of the ground after a quick rinse
I find myself doing the same

I made a batch of horseradish schnapps (хреновуха) and I have to say it’s something different and good. Something that you take a shot before dinner. It fills you with warmth from the inside. The smell is at first pure horseradish and then you can sense also the lemon peel and a bit of a sweet undernote.

My recipe:
1L 45% neutral
180g fresh horseradish cut to dices
1 tps mustard seeds
2 tps honey
1 lemon (juice and the peel)
Macerated for 5 days and then strained.

Maybe next time try making Wasabi Schnapps with real Wasabi. In the US, most Wasabi is just horseradish.
