Baby Doug fuel still

Post by drmiller100 »

This is an old design I had.

THIS IS A FUEL ONLY STILL. NOT SUITABLE FOR DRINKING AS I USED NON APPROVED MATERIALS FOR CONSUMPTION

10 percent wash. Pulled 180 proof.

Column is 1/2 inch rigid copper tubing.
I ran 1500 watts but that is too much. 1200 would be better.

The column works for reflux as the vapor heats the pipe, and boils the stream running back down the bottom. Further the pipe loses a fair amount of heat to air transfer.

What you have here seems a variation on the "spiral still", or a sloped lyne arm. It seems a good compact way to get reflux in a small space. I would expect that a 1/2" copper pipe (internal cross section ~1.5cm^2) might require 280Watts+PLUS enough to compensate the heat losses. A coil of flex copper tube might be an option.

Thanks!!! I made my first one in 2009, and watched a guy run it a bunch.
1000 watts is about right without packing, and flex doesn't work.

The magic of this one is the vapor heats the tubing and boils the stream returning back down which gives plate equivalents.

I love that the fire extinguishers are hiding behind all the partially full fuel canisters.
