Most alcohol content mash help.

Post by guvens »

Hello pro distillers,

I am about to ferment my very first mash. I will be using this distill for my ethanol fireplace. Thats why I really want to get the highest ethanol content as possible. Since its gonna be my first ferment, I want to test my skills for the first run.

Lets say that I want to ferment 25 liter mash with %25 of ethanol, I need to add 17x25x25 = 10.625 kg of sugar.

My question is with a turbo yeast, can I really get %25 of ethanol mash at the end of fermentation ? Turbo yeast specs are max %20 of ethanol in a week.

Please advise, thanks in advance

Well, the main reason is to test my skills. For the second reason, I am currently in Istanbul and ethanol is highly taxed here. Its cheaper to distill your own fuel. Distilling is legal here up to 350 liter per year.

I would go with a lower alcohol potential and just do larger washes, even if your going after a large volume of distilled product its better to deal with more washes and lower gravity ferments then high gravity. Go check out the novice distillers section and read, read, and read.

A key for high gravity washes is keeping your yeast healthy.
Turbo may work well for your purpose, but you can also try something like this to manage your own “turbo” wash by supplying a healthy environment for your fermentation.

This isn’t a recipe for pushing abv but may help you with nutrients:

Thank you very MishiganCornhusker for the the link above. Very good information, Its is too complicated for me. I will stick with recommended sugar wash recipe. I may try linked method after my 100th wash.

Thank you guys.

If you want to feed the ethanol to your fire place use what yeast and sugar you want.
If you want to drink it DONT use turbo yeast and best to not go beyond 10-12% abv in your wash.
A sugar wash is not called a mash.....a mash is made with grain.
If we all start talking a different language things get confusing and difficult.

I can't do it.
Around 14% is the highest I can do in a week
pH control really becomes a problem with high gravity wash's
You'll also need to feed the yeast it's sugar and nutrients in several steps
The real killer is the alcohol tolerance of the yeast decreases with temp
But if you lower the temp the yeast slows down to a crawl

another thing with high abv is the yeast will "pop" with a high enough alcohol concentration, their cell wall isnt made to be able to handle really thin liquids such as a high abv wash
