Possible still modification

Post by 2timezDRUNK »

So I run my 1/2 keg as a reflux on a 200,000 BTU burner. I normally mash in about 50gal of wash and do five runs. I have procured a 6gal heavy duty SS stock pot, and a 5gal empty nitrous tank. The attached file shows just an idea, thinking of inverting the nos tank to mimic a conical style cap. I realize that’s a lot of cuts, tri-clamps, and reducers..And a lot of welds!! But I have a master mechanic best friend who specializes in welding. Would this be a feasible option for a modification or do I just convert back to a pot still using the nos tank as a thumper. I’d like to cut my run time in half. I took me 30hrs to run a 50gal sugar wash. 10 of those hours were spent on changeover and the still heating back up.

With a 15.5 gal boiler all the shit above it won't change the run time. May take longer.

Doesn't change the fact that it's aluminum.

So could I just use it as a thumper? Or waste of time?

Look at getting another keg as a preheater . You use the next keg yo be stripped to cool the first one . As soon as the first ones done , you drain it and fill it from you preheater which will be almost boiling and ready to strip .

Uou basically save hours and hours of time waiting for the next strip to get to boiling . You also save a shit load of water because the the next wash is cooling the present .

You could also increase the boiler power , but that condenser looks pretty small .

If I was going to do any mods , it would be to make a bigger condenser so I could run more power .

There is nothing wrong with your 2” riser , making that bigger won’t change a thing .

This what I meant about using a pre-heater keg .
The condenser connects to the preheater output on right . It basically will use no water because the keg full of wash is doing the condensing and heating up at the same time .

Pinched pic from BlueSasquatch Pot Pre-heater thumper topic .
