Pintoshine 6 gallon Still

Post by greasydog26 »

Evening Guys,

So, this is what I have so far on my traditional Pintoshine pot still. I have learned several things while doing this project so far. I have also posted over on AD and will leave a link below so that you can see a progression of pics throughout the build so far. I have several things left to do including the thumper and worm/flake stand. I have been trying to come up with a design solution for the lid on my thumper so that it can be removable and be cleaned down inside. If anyone has any suggestion please let me know what you think. I will be posting at both HD and AD so hope yall enjoy!

Hey guys, I bought the metal from an online gutter supply store. They had good prices on shipping and were fast. I bought the 3' x 8' sheet for $180.00. I will be posting more pictures probably later in the day after I work some more on it. Thanks for liking what I have done so far!

Mr. Brown, she is 6 gallons as per Pint's template. I think that will be enough to get me started until I find that I would like a bigger on and then I might have to go for the 12 Gallon

Shes a real beauty, very rustic. Question on the copper. (im new to copper weights) that was built out of 16oz? Dose the cap feel flimsy at all?

I thought that the 16 oz would as be flimsy but it is alot thicker then I thought. Once everything is soldered together it is not flimsy at all. I have not worry that this still will last me a liftime if I wanted it to. The roofing copper is 1/8 -1/4 hardness, but once it is heated and then hammered it becomes fairly rigid. There are a couple videos on Youtube and you can look at the Pintoshine videos on Youtube also. Really good starter. The project has been easier than I thought and have really enjoyed working with the copper as it is a unique metal. Goodluck!

Well guys, I have almost completed my thumper now and only have the top to do before it is completed. I do have a couple questions though. My lyne arm is not exactly at 90 degrees and is keeping my inlet tube going into my thumper at an angle. I was wondering if this will hurt anything as I thought about taking the lyne arm off and straightening it up but might just leave it the way it is, I haven’t decided yet. Also, can I bend my worm without putting any water or salt in it? It seems like it will bend fine, but just like other concepts of this build there might be things that I am not considering.

Got my worm bent today and soldered up my worm box. Now I just have to figure out how to connect it all together. Found a way to straighten up my inlet into my thumper and cut the holes for the thumper top. Also, bought some polishing compound and some a grinder.

Today I finished up my thumper and built a parrot. For the base of the parrot I dished out a piece of scrap copper I had and it was surprisingly easier than I thought. I have also polished up the boiler and lyne arm but am going to wait to show pictures when it is completed.

WV, yeah man PM any time I'm on here all the time so any question that you have, ask. However, I'm new at this to but it is not that hard. My advice to you is go buy some poster board and cut out the template then tape and staple it together. This gives you a good point of reference for how big it is and how to make the proper cuts and adjustments. I used a dovetail pattern on my boiler, but I wish that I had used the same seam as my boiler and worm box. On my boiler and worm box I used a 1/2" x1/2" square to make my tabs then I folded one back and left one. Solder on the inside of anything you can. This makes a much cleaner look. I didn't do this on the boiler and wish that I had. You can see how the thumper and worm box look a lot neater than the boiler. Just my suggestions and what I will do when I build another. Goodluck man!

Well, I couldn't wait any longer to post the pics of the polished copper. The only thing I have left to do is connect the oulet of the thumper to the worm. I need a 3/8" elbow but don't get off of work in time to stop by and get one. Many thanks to all the people that have helped me and answered my many questions, I couldn't have done it without this site. Thanks guys and I'm going to keep posting my many firsts on this forum so watch out for them. I'm hoping to get a wash going when I get home early next week and will put up some pictures of the still preforming...Hopefully. Thanks again guys!

Damn man, absolutely gorgeous build. I recently bought a 6 gal copper alembic, the price was surprisingly good, but I'd be way more proud had I actually built something. Especially something that pretty. Have you done much metal working in the past?

Thanks midwest. Yeah, I'm glad that I built the still. I haven't done any real metal work in the past but am pretty good with my hands. I like the look of the alembic stills and am curious how they run?

That looks pretty snazzy man. Nice work! I wonder if you could use these plans a base for an alembic? Looks like with a bit of hammering you could make it happen

Yeah TO, I have wondered that myself about building an alembic. I think that it would be nice to have like a turnup style still. It is basically just a rounded off pintoshine still. Might try it one day...

So, did my vinegar run the other night and all seemed to go well. However, I did learn some valuable lessons that will help me when I make an actual run. First, never move the still after you have pasted it… makes leaks!!! Second, always keep an eye on the still all of the time. Went to grab something from the basement really fast, and come back to water running into the floor out of my flake stand. Also, cold water runs in the top and hot water out the bottom of your flake stand.
I did my sacrificial alcohol run with some nasty wine and sake that I had lying around. I mixed this with some water which made probably 2 gallons. It only took it about 30 minutes to heat up before the first drops were coming from the worm. The first alcohol to come out had a blue tint to it and smelled strongly of fuel or nail polish. After collecting two shot glasses full I began collecting in pint sized mason jars. I collected two half pint of alcohol and then shut it down (the wife was getting tired of the mess in the kitchen…LOL). The proof really didn’t change much from about 60-70. I am guessing this is so low as a result of charging my thumper with water, but really don’t know? After, collecting two half pints I could tell a difference in the 4 jars that I collected in but I don’t believe that I distilled all of the alcohol from the wash, for the simple reason that I never did smell the wet cardboard or wet dog smell of the tails. Once I had collected what I did I removed the cap and the wash that was left in the pot smelled strongly of wet dog or stinky socks, I’m guessing this is normal? I enjoyed running the still over the past few days and have learned some valuable lessons. However, I’m pretty sure I have some more reading and learning to do before I can feel fully confident in my hobby.
