Grain spinner build

Post by 700G » Tue Oct 20, 2015 7:42 am

I put this together from stuff that I had laying around (except for the bearings) and it seems to work pretty well. I will probably scale it up for the ability to do the whole batch of grains in one go. It's off balance, but that was to be expected. It spun out the red wheat malt pretty good yesterday. Kind of a pain to take apart though due to the setscrews on the bottom bearing needing to have Loctite.

Forgive my ignorance... But what is the purpose of using a centrifuge on your grain?

The only thing popping into my head is that it could be useful for straining the water out in cases where you don't want to ferment on the grain?

@Scribbler ...Or maybe you want to get your ferment off the grain prior to running it....

Oh yeah. I tried to make a rice vodka once. The liquid enzymes shredded the cooked grain till it turned to sludge. A strainer like this would have been invaluable.

Grain spinner build

Post by Scribbler » Wed Oct 21, 2015 6:52 pm

So far, I've been sticking with ujssm to give me a predictable base from which to learn and get better...

I haven't looked into fermenting off the grains yet, so I don't really know why it is desires me... I just assumed that on-the-grains = more flavour & goodness...

Not so?

Oops. Sorry for the hijack. Feel free to ignore this.

I ferment on the grain, but use this to spin the liquid out of the grain after the ferment.

The washing machine worked great till he tried sparging. And it should have had the skins on and it bolted down. Plus you could use it with your controller or a router speed controller.

Just guessing. I'd say he's spinning it with a drill.

I know. The mahine was the link shown above to artisan I'm sure the drill works dandy perhaps a bit small for larger batches, so maybe have 3-4 of them lined up and dump them afterwards.
