Brass Liebig
I figure the headline caught your attention...
I would like to underline that some materials aren't considered safe to have contact with our product, but as over half of my Liebig is brass..it justifies the headline.
So for the new members in here...please read about safety and appropriate materials if in doubt.
It's been a long time since i made a build and i wouldn't really need a new Liebig, but i couldn't turn a good offer down..who says no to free materials..?
Total length is 1150 mm, outershell accounts for 930 mm.
With those dimensions, i think it will be the last Liebig i'll ever need. Plenty of cooling even on a fast strippingrun on my potstill.
List of materials :
Brasspipe Ø 25 mm L: 930 mm.
Piece of brass (stock) Ø 25 mm.
Copperpipe Ø 18 mm OD L: 1060 mm.
Piece of brass (stock) Ø 15 mm.
Piece of brass hexagonal (stock) 40 mm all sides.
1/2" copperfitting and a piece of Ø 16 mm copperpipe, both from a previous project.
Solder: Boliden Bergsøe BERA 5 leadfree 5% AG, and Böhler Fontargen 55% AG.
Anorganic flux noncorrosive.
Had to buy two stainless barbed hose connectors for the hairraising amount of 2$ each..
Reinforced vinylhose 2X 60 mm.

Re: Brass Liebig
Looking good. I don't know much about brass... how is t for shedding heat? I know that being a Leebig condenser water is the transfer medium but with copper you do get some cooling from the copper shedding heat.
I wish I had fab ability like that. Looks good. Keep the picks coming.

Re: Brass Liebig
Thanks Yak...
Brass isn't such a good heat conductor as copper, but still better than stainless.
It disperses the heat surprisingly well, about half way down it is already significant cooler.
I run my sink as a reservoir, so the amount of water is small.
The thermal mass of this thing really wicks away a lot of heat.
I run with a 2KW element in a 25L boiler and even on a strippingrun i only fill the sink four times (winter period).
Now the big question is how much water i will use during the summer period when it comes in a little warm.
I also made a support stand for it, cause as you can imagine it's on the heavy side. Haven't weighted it yet, but i assume 2,5 Kg without water.
Without any support, sooner or later it will crack my connection to the stillhead as that is the weakest point.

Wow, that looks great. I love the way, brass, copper, and stainless look when part of the same build and contrasting one another.

Re: Brass Liebig
After deleting my long winded post in the defense of brass, I will say that is a beautiful piece and well executed. I like the contrast it often provides.
Well done!
Well done!

Re: Brass Liebig
"Muzzle brake"..lol..
My friend saw the parts and had similar thoughts.
Besides "artistic freedom", it serves a real purpose.
A plate will protrude from my support stand and fit right into one of the slots/slits, so it cannot move or fall off the stand.
It's still my favourite Liebig for pot stilling, almost impossible to overpower this thing....even with just a small amount of water.
