30 gallon copper pot
1 1/2 inch Lap joint on the side. For the seat for the cap at the top I used a Welsh seam which came out real well. Gotta make the cap, and install boiler drain and element bung. Will get more pics soon. Have really enjoyed this build so far.
18 inch diameter 28 inches to bottom of cape

Re: 30 gallon copper pot
Those rivets were not fun, even annealed. Thank goodness a good friend came by and with 2 sets of hands got the side and top all riveted. Hoping to get the cap and lyne arm made tonight. I was so amazed how easy that welsh seam worked. I'll get some more pics up tonight.

Thank you so much twisted!! i have no idea how you did it but thank you. Me too! i am excited to get my cleaning runs done and see if all copper makes a difference. I almost made a straighter walled cap, but so glad i took the time to make it tapered. I love the look of it.

That's a fine peice. I'd have a hard time resisting the urge to file, sand and polish it. That will bring you a lot of fine spirits.

Nice! Good to see the old school carried forward! Thanks for sharing. I was gonna polish mine when I built it vut then I just started using it. I have been asked how old it is as it is already getting a nice patina to it.

You're welcome, ezlle! It only took a sec. All I do is save the photo to my computer and open it. There's a rotate button (top middle) that I have to hit once, then save and attach. You should have the same kind of photo editing functions resident in your computer's OS.ezlle71 wrote: ↑Wed Feb 24, 2021 9:33 am Thank you so much twisted!! i have no idea how you did it but thank you. Kudos for tapering the cap. It makes a big difference aesthetically and I'll bet it works a treat on passive reflux too.

Re: 30 gallon copper pot
I usually don't polish too much, but i will probably use the roloc discs to get some of the solder warts smoothed out. and some ketchup to get all the flux cleaned up. I like patina.Deplorable wrote: ↑Wed Feb 24, 2021 10:22 am That's a fine peice. I'd have a hard time resisting the urge to file, sand and polish it. That will bring you a lot of fine spirits.

A beautiful sight.....something to be really proud of, and not a piece of stainless in sight
Re: 30 gallon copper pot
Do you have any other pictures of this seam? I came across this thread while searching for "welsh seam". I've been searching off and on for about a month trying to find info on that type of seam. It's mentioned in several threads but no diagrams or pictures, or detailed description for that matter. I'm guessing for each tab visible in the photo there is another tab underneath? Very nice build by the way!

Re: 30 gallon copper pot
That looks great. did you mean 20 Ga copper? im not familiar with 20 oz copper. I want to build a similar one and use the tri clamp copper ferrules brewers hardwear sells for another future build, a 2" column still
Re: 30 gallon copper pot
Copper is often designated by how much one square foot weighs, so 20oz copper weighs 20 ounces per square foot area.

Re: 30 gallon copper pot
River rat, yea pretty simple and straight forward. I measured 1/2 inch and scribed a line and then marked every 1/2 inch and cut up to the line with shears. Bend one in one out alternately the length of the seam. Fitted it and hammer and dollied it all flat.
Thanks salt I’m excited to run all copper.
And Duda,20 oz copper is 22 gauge.

Re: 30 gallon copper pot
Thanks Ezlle. I've got a similar joint to make soon and that type of seam looks like the ticket. Once again, nice work!

Re: 30 gallon copper pot
I got the heating element installed day before yesterday. I made it double thick where i installed the element. Got the last little adapters made to fit my worm and thump keg to the lyne arm today at lunch. Hoping to get a vinegar run in tonight yet. fingers crossed. I have some alcohol i've used for cleaning runs before set back and some faints to make my Sac alcohol run this weekend if time allows. Excited to try it out.

Re: 30 gallon copper pot
Got both of my cleaning run made this weekend, so i am ready for the season to begin. Steamed it for an hour or better with the vinegar and water run. Sac alcohol run was smooth and uneventful. I felt like the still came up to temp faster than my old keg boiler. Same element and controller. Using paste wasn't as near a pain in the ass that some make it out to be. I'm ready to mash in and see what kinda product it can make.

Re: 30 gallon copper pot
Y'all with copper pots, how do you store them? I just wanna mitigate any corrosion before its a problem. After my sac alco run i rinsed with water and let it dry. So far so good. Thanks

Re: 30 gallon copper pot
My pot isn't copper but the rest is. I just rinse with water and dry like you did. Some of the parts are original from around 2004-05, not showing any signs of corrosion.

Re: 30 gallon copper pot
The pain comes in on subsequent runs. Like when you ferment 3x the boiler capacity. Breaking down for next run and cleaning crusty paste off. Then adding new back.ezlle71 wrote: ↑Mon Mar 01, 2021 8:41 am Got both of my cleaning run made this weekend, so i am ready for the season to begin.
