copper pot should be tin lined?

Post by Makaveli »

Hi all!

Recently i have been told on 2 separate occasions that my copper pot should be tin lined?

I understand that if you cook food that you will eat, then it needs to be tin lined. My understanding is because the food absorbs the leached metals from the copper? but i don't know if the same rules apply if you are distilling Brandy in a copper pot? Do I need to tin line my copper pot? I will if i have to, but don't want to if I don't need to.

Are all copper distilleries tin lined? Does the copper leech into the the distilled Rakia

I appreciate any experienced advise on this!

Copper Stills are just pure copper , NOT tin lined.
Who ever is telling you to line it with tin has absolutely no idea what they are talking about.

Tinning copper cookware was to prevent acidic food from reacting with the copper. We actually want washes and vapors to react and pull out sulfides.

The European Union demands that copper used for food processing must be fully tinned.
But the copper used for the drinking water pipes is not tinned. Copper in distilled drinks might come from the down path, i.e. the condenser, but there the fluid is mostly neutral. If there is any copper dissolved in the boiler by an acid wash, this copper wille remain in the boiler and the backset.

So: do not tin your still.

That's a fact.
But a copper pot will last much longer when it's coated with tin.
The downside of tin coating. Especially if it's old, how much lead is in the tin :?:

I’ve got some cooper cooking pots lined with tin but the still is straight cooper and it get’s all kinds of cool seasoned patina on the inside - not verdigris. After a run the bit below the liquid level is pretty shiny and the parts above the liquid are more red/brown maybe even with a little bit of solids cooked on - not a bunch. Rinse and go next run!

Tin pots get the stainless scrubbie on the inside to shine and clean but never on the cooper. Very seasoned on the outside. 20yrs worth!

Cheers,
