Copper cleaning tip

Post by Andrew_90 »

Hi,

Thought I would share a product that has saved me immeasurable time and satisfied my need to have good looking stills. They are very thin Bosch Emory pads for finishing wood. They have a sponge interlayer which allows you to reach minor dents in the pipework and kettles. They last for ages and work a real treat.

Another tip I would like to share is that after cleaning you copper leave is for a couple of weeks without touching it. It develops a natural patina and you can then handle the copper without the fear of your hands tarnishing it.

There are similar sponges used to wash the dishes https://amzn.to/39wf3vI those sponges you showed I know them, I think they are too aggressive. If you want a nice patina of copper after cleaning your copper, pass a wet rag and dry it immediately, let it rest at the air.

I’ve used a dry wall sanding pad with very similar results.

I’ve also used hot backset and a dish scrubber followed by a fresh water rinse. Air dried in the sun.
🎱 The struggle is real and this rabbit hole just got interesting.
Per a conversation I had with Mr. Jay Gibbs regarding white oak barrel staves: “…you gotta get it burning good.”

Nowhere near as aggressive as a dishwash sponge. This must be akin to around 600 to 800grit.
