No bake cookies from spent mash grains

Post by DFitz »

PSYCH!!!!! Hahahaha.... Gotcha. Who the hell would ever do such a thing. Then again, my wife is a pretty good cook. I could make some horse treats out of em or something. Maybe even sell em to the local farm supply. I'm running out of places to put grain...

I make dog treats out of spent grain, still doesn't put a dent in the mass of spent grains though. Only if fermented off grain though.

I dumped about 50lbs of spent grain out back once, never again. the stink carried all over the property. Now I live in a place that takes any and all compostables, I just dump them in the compost bin and they take them away.

I usually burn my grain at night by the light of the moon with a little bit of kerosene. Takes care of that smell right off. Been a little wet out lately though.

Spent grain dog treats

4 cups spent grain
2 cups flour
1 cup peanut butter (all natural)
2 eggs
Mix all ingredients thoroughly. Press down into a dense layer on a large cookie sheet. Score almost all the way through into the shapes you want. Bake for about half an hour at 350 F to solidify them. Loosen them from the sheet, break the biscuits apart and return them, loosely spread out on the cookie sheet, to the oven at 225 F for 3 to 4 hours (or until they are really dry) to prevent mold growth. Store in an airtight container to keep them dry and mold-free.
I put mine in a ziplock in the freezer

just be sure your dog drinks allot of water. Grains take allot of water to digest, wouldn't want the vet bill for an impaction. Although the ass press technique might work.

The whole reason for no bake is to retain the alcohol. Maybe they would be good people cookies too.

Hmmm, retaining alcohol would mean fermented on the grain. An experiment might be in order here.

I have seriously thought about adding spent grain to my morning smoothy in the Magic Bullet (they mean it when they say magic) but don't think it would grind smooth

Well I can't speak to the No Bake method, but my SOH bakes up a batch of spent grain cookies sometimes after I'm done lautering. She puts the spent grain into the blender with some milk first to break down the barley hulls a little, otherwise they can be a bit.. pokey. They come out kind of like oatmeal cookies with a sweet crunchy outside cause she rolls em in cinnamon sugar before she bakes them. I always make sure to set aside a quart of spent grains just in case she's got a mind to make em

I eat a few spoons of spent beer grains quite often after lautering a beer. Warm, sweet, nutty, a little crunchy. After a bit the excessive hulls are bit much to deal with tho.

I turn them under in the garden. Great soil conditioner. Takes a lot of lime to even out the pH, though.
Distilling at 110f and 75 torr.

SWMBO and I made spent grain pizza last night. Dehydrated and ground up the grains super fine, then added to my usual high-gluten flour. Leavened with the dregs from a bottle conditioned homebrew too, just because I'm showing off.

I feed my spent grains to the hogs or mom's chickens, but then the eggs come out fried!! I have been known to feed our steers that we are feeding out for butcher spent grains too. I was surprised the first time they went to the steers, they were on that wet grain like white on rice!! The channel catfish in the creek has got some too. No use letting them used grains go to waste!! :)

I’m trying these out. Cut into 32 dog treats per sheet/batch.

Eko loves the dough so expecting the finished biscuits to go over well too! Could probably use spent grains with some other more nutritional ingredients in a home made dry food!

Well it’s not like they’re made from dog lol. Just add some tiny little mole-asses and a pinch of nutmeg and they can be shed-snacks?

That would make for a nice desert with the usual shed snacks, a can of vienna sausages and crackers.
Plain ole pot rig.
