New 40 gal. Stainless w/side bung $180
Scrounging around I found a website selling new, closed-head 40 gallon stainless drums with side bung for $180
Figured that was a pretty good deal and haven't seen any mention of this particular company on any of the forums. They are located in New Hampshire, so who knows what shipping would be but they claim to charge only the actual shipping costs.
It is a maple syrup supply place called: bascom maple
I'm confident ya'll can figure out their website and I am in no way affiliated with these folks.

A food grade drum will likely be lined with some plastic. Food safe of course but are these alcohol safe materials?
Re: New 40 gal. Stainless w/side bung $180

Re: New 40 gal. Stainless w/side bung $180
Those are stainless steel drums and are not lined.
I live in a place where maple sugar is the big business, and all are in the starting blocks for the upcoming season !
The region is called "the Maple" , guess why
HDNB 750$ is way too pricey ! Even the general store here sells them under 200$ !

Those are pretty good prices. I have yet to play with soldering SS. Is it hard to convert the top to being remove-able and sealable for use as a mashtun / fermenter / thumper ?
Thx,

I called Bascom and their barrels are 100% stainless. No liner whatsoever.
Re: New 40 gal. Stainless w/side bung $180
I would not advice to remove the top. Those barrels are a bit like pea cans for the top
You could weld a tri clamp fittings on top and sides for fermenting or thumper, but for mashing I don't think this is the best.

That’s a really good deal.
Even the local barrel recycling place sells used stainless drums for more than this new.

I’m pretty sure you can get a bung to tri clamp adapter that just threads into the existing bungs.cede wrote:I would not advice to remove the top. Those barrels are a bit like pea cans for the top

Re: New 40 gal. Stainless w/side bung $180
Hmmm maybe take 2 of those triclamp adaptors, lay the tank on its side, put the column in the middle port and the heating element in the other which used to be the top? that was easy.
Re: New 40 gal. Stainless w/side bung $180
That'd be about $275 for a new, no weld, no solder, stainless, submarine(ish) 30 gallon boiler. Not bad at all. Just add an element, tc adapter and controller if you're new, or swap 'em over from a current rig if you're already going.

Re: New 40 gal. Stainless w/side bung $180
I might just do that depending on the shipping and build a stripper
Re: New 40 gal. Stainless w/side bung $180
If you know anyone at a business with UPS world shipping or Fedex shipping hit them up, good discounts for larger size shipping going from business to business. This drum will be considered oversized and that comes with a premium shipping cost for residential delivery.Big Stogie wrote:I might just do that depending on the shipping and build a stripper

I'm sure you can find some in the upper US states where they are many maple syrup producers.
I can't believe that it's that cheaper in Canada.
