I swear Hunny, last thing...

Post by ShineonCrazyDiamond »

You know you have a problem, err hobby, when you just can't find the "end" of all the supplies you are going to need to do it.

Honestly, I make a list every day, check it off and say "Finally, I have everything I need. Smooth sailing from...oh man, I forgot...I need...

The wife asked me how much I spent on this project so far. I told her I didn't know. She said (albeit playfully), "Yes you do..."

Honest to God, I really don't know. The money goes $10 at a time.

So, here's another $10 thing I HAD to have. It's stupid how happy I am to get something small like this in the mail.

Still, add it to your list!

To bad it's made in china. I swear, you never even know these days. But, it's not Plastic.

She's helping! :P

Yeah, well it was her idea for me to start this, anyways. I needed a hobby. She don't really care, I think she was just looking to justify her hobby purchases. After all, many things I am, but a hypocrite is not one of them. She figures if I spend $300, then she just finding her next must have. Probably a new lens for photography.

I am doing it to myself. lol.

And I haven't been able to prove my liquor expertise, yet. All promises thus far.

I'm married to a woman just like that. I got the distillery, she got a new Land Rover.
No doubt I came out on top of that one.

I hear that guys! Mine hasn't asked what I spent, but she knows I can't say anything when she comes home with something new.

She just hates when I'm in the middle of something and have a bit of a mess going on in the kitchen.

But I'm the same way, I think I finally have everything then end up wanting to try something else, alter something or just start a new build. If we just face it and realize it is never going to end we would be better off.

After I had gotten firmly rooted in this hobby SOH had some of the same questions . She was also liking what I was making as well as keeping track of what I had invested .
We went to the local pub one night and she had 4 mixed drinks as well as a modest supper . I had 3 beers and a similar modest supper . When she looked over the tab she remarked to me that I could have made us 3 quarts of good likker for what those 4 bar drinks cost her .
She has never questioned what I spend on the hobby since .

Her Indoors bought me a 1/2" pipe bender today, $5 at a charity shop.

Another $2 for a laser for my laser parrot experiment.

I still haven't found a non-plastic funnel, or re-purposed my pre-heater to use as a thumper.....

+1 on the lazer setup Chris, seen you mention it in another post.
I feel for all of you, my missus does the, *you spent this, so should I*, no worries I say, she's one of these woman that likes to save and really doesn't do the girly thing much, so she hardly ever buys herself anything even when I keep saying GO spend money. Ends up me spending it it her buying me something haha.

Oh man, I am nickle and dimeing this thing to death; wife is supportive, but I cringe when I think of how much "stuff" I've ordered in the last two months.

For example, I have 3 volt meters off eBay. The first seemed cheesy, the second, an old American made meter that was once high quality, broke during testing, and the third is too small. In the end, I bought what I should have bought in the first place, a nice Murata combo volt/amp/watt meter.

I need to throttle back on the impulse purchases. Do I really need 15 stainless steel 90 degree "ELL" compression fittings? These are NIB Parker fittings that are $25 each new; $2 off eBay. But I don't need them all! Couldn't resist. :esurprised:

Well crap. Did it again. Just another $60 day in the brew shop.

Picked up a
-5 gallon carboy - $30
-(2) 1 gallon jugs - $6
-Auto Siphon 1/2" - $15
-10ft tube for the above - $5

Waiting till the wife goes to bed to unload the car. Priceless.

See, I learned to make a good vodka first because that is the wife's drink of choice. Once I got that going good its a "good" hobby. Now I experiment with other things as long as I can keep a stock of good vodka on hand. :D

I told my old lady I was gonna buy a still. She said no. I said OK I am going to the Harley dealer they have a nice Ultra Classic in right now. Now I have a still.

Only advice I will give is dont tell her "Its my money I earned I will spend it however I want. When you have a job I wont tell you how to spend your money."

I used to be embarrassed to say this, but not any more... my wife makes more coin than I do! She is a skilled professional.

It's a good thing, because her closet has a shoe collection that would make Imelda Marcos envious. Can't complain, it's her $$. Yet we still talk about major purchases, anything North of $500 or so.

Last stupid impulse purchase - a "Digipot" numeric variable resistor for heat control. Looks like these, except the resistor bank is external, meaning I can change them to get a resistance range for my heat controller.

Image

The Digipot was fifteen bucks. Then I priced the 1% resistors to make it a megohm pot. The price took it beyond a brand new 1 Meg Digipot. Now it's sitting on my desk, saying "Ha Ha, made you buy me!"

Yea, since the housing market, and construction tanked some time back, I have been hit and miss the past couple of years on the job market so my wife is the steady earner these days. Like now. :|

50 cents today on a triangular bottle for my laser parrot project. I'm up to $2.50 on this project so far and it appears to be working ok. Now I need to know how to cut a triangular glass bottle in half, on an angle, to make the parrot prism. There is a course on glass cutting next week I could join ....

 OK, you got me. A LASER parrot? Is that like a shark with laser eyes? What the heck is it?

I wish you were near by. I have a diamond hone machine that could cut and polish a dead-flat, perfect facet in it, like a facet on a gem stone. So long as it isn't too big. :ewink:

Hell ya, ya gotta have a small stainless funnel like that. How else you gonna fill your bottles. Im surprised it wasnt higher up your list.

This hobby is by far the least expensive of any of my hobbies. I think wifey is grateful Im pre-occupied with this now and not bringing home $2500 guitars and amps on a regular basis anymore (for a while) LOL Altho she rolled her eyes when I brought home a 5th chest freezer to use as a lagering chest. Hey man, gotta have a good Czech or Vienna lager on tap right?

A while back I came in the house with a 50lb sack of grain over my shoulder. Wifey says, "how much does that cost" to which I reply, "Horse food, $10 bucks a sack hun, damn near free" She never asked again.
In theory there's no difference between theory and practice. But in practice there is.
