Whats your hangover cure?

Little or nothing to do with distillation.

Whats your hangover cure?

Post by ScottishBoy »

RD posted a two day hangover story and I got to thinkin that it had been a while since I had a hangover. But sometimes one will slow you down.
If Im feeling slow, I find I want starches (potatos usually) and hot foods. I have been known to drink salsa straight from the jar like it was water.

What are everyones favorite ways of coping with "Post Party Poisoning"?

If I'm feeling a little "slow," I do something physical like chop fire wood. bd.

My cure is avoidance. Drink my own stuff, and do not overindulge.

Not had a hangover for years. I tend to slow down as it gets later, and alternate with coke or fruit juice. I still drink too much for good health, but the extra fluids helps. When I start craving tomato juice I know its time to stop.

Take a bunch of B-vitamins, a bunch. Water and a hot shower. Usually feel better once I get my clothes on. But that's only after drinking beer. My homemade doesn't give hangovers.

Ever since I started to make my own I can't stand most store bought stuff. Just a few rums and Scotch. Everything smells like heads now!!!!!

Prilosec the night before
I take a B-complex daily, which is kind of necessary if you drink regularly
Drink extra water the night before
Avoid anything with acid in it for breakfast. No tomato juice, orange juice or fresh citrus fruit at all, no hot sauce.

Eat eggs for breakfast with no black or red pepper, and a little bread to soak up stomach acid
Not typically one to floss

I totaly agree, I like a good drink, but drinking a few drinks feels better. I used to drink a lot :econfused: (before I started distilling), but I'm glad by now I can have fun with a few drinks.
Good taste is far more important then becoming drunk.

Prevention is better than cure. So the big 4 to take are 1) water 2) n-acetyl cysteine or NAC 3) vitamin B1 thiamine 4) vitamin C. There are a host of other suggestions on the web - green tea, vitamin E etc. but i dont know if the work. Since ethanol is a diuretic most people become dehydrated so a few litres of water post binge help. The liver uses cysteine to metabolise aldehyde (alcohol's breakdown product) and so a gram of NAC will keep the liver opted up.It costs about $12 for 25 grams on eBay and can be substituted by eating a heap of protein (eggs etc) but you might not feel like a big meal the day after. Thiamine is also depleted by alcohol. Actually so is magnesium so some Epsom salts should be taken.
If you have a headache and nausea, paracetamol ( acetaminophen) may help but it also requires detoxing by the liver so may prolong the problem. Non steroidal antiinflammatories (ibuprofen etc) are OK but make gastritis (an upset stomach) worse so I reckon a dose of steroids (e.g dexamethasone) works a treat.
If you're a regular heavy drinker, you may be able to attenuate some of the complications of heavy drinking (e.g brain damage) by taking vitamins and NAC but probably not complications like heart failure. Just a guess anyhow as there aren't many trials out there.

I drink my own booze, and plenty of water before getting shit faced. I pop right out of bed 5-6am no problem. No need for a hair of the dog, or snake oil. Just my regular cup of coffee.

Anything with sugar is a sure fired headache in my book. So i avoid chaser and mixed drinks when getting sideways.

Yep, well made booze with no sugar or juice works for me. Lots of water and B vitamins is good drinking or not.
FYI, acetaminophen probably shouldn't be taken by anyone who puts a load on their liver (like most of us).

Quality drink made with good cuts!

Now, drinking my own, I'm much more likely to have a dehydrated stomach ache than a headache...

Interesting having this thread revived as it's OP hasn't been around for a couple years and with the other thread on missing members it seems fitting this one was revived.

I just work it off, usually by 9 or 10 AM I am fine, I make home made wine and beer, the wine will definately sneak up on me and give a headache in the morning.

Seeing a few names in this thread that aren't around any more, I guess it will happen to all of us sooner or later.. :(

I am not usually one for snake oil but I am a huge fan of milk thistle supplements on drinking nights. I can't find any clinical data on it but it's worked great for me. I take 1000mg before drinking with a glass of water and another when I am done or in the morning and it's always worked. We have some friends that we always drink to much with (and always wine and port) who got me started and I've never looked back. You can pick it up at Walmart, Walgreens, etc. and no I am not a paid spokesman ;)

Haven't had a hangover since making my own. But when I did, a greasy double quarter pounder loaded with salt from McDonald's and chugging a gatorade always did the trick for me

Haven't had one since I started making my own , either . Prior to that ; what black coffee didn't cure got chased away by hair of the dog that bit me . It's always 5 o'clock somewhere when your head hurts .
If you ain't the lead dog in the team , the scenery never changes . Ga Flatwoods made my avatar and I want to thank him for that .
Don't drink water , fish fornicate in it .
