pics of new anvil...for tool geeks and blacksmiths...

here's a couple pics of my new anvil. there's a handful of change on the last one to show the scale of this beast.

this thing is incredible. 450 pound nimba gladiator. the slender horns replace the small jeweler's anvils that i use, and the massive 7" wide face is an awesome workspace. incredibly versatile and the best tool investment i have ever made.

i had some serious emotional attachment to the old ones that i sold off, but in the end...i couldn't be happier!

Looks like you're pretty serious ! ! !
Definitely an awesome anvil ! ! !
It is not the matter, nor, the space between the matter,
but rather, it is that finite point at which the two meet,
that, and only that, is what is significant...........
(Of course, I could be wrong) ..........

it was $2275 + 159 for s/h. i sold my old 356# kholswa and the antique 405# fisher to fund it, so was no out of pocket.

some day down the road, i want to get one of the titans (120#) for my clean room...i've got some other stuff to sell off to fund it.

Any blemishes on it are barely blemishes on the surface.
I did not note any pitting..Does have markings but I did not take note.

Only took the one pic.

the edges are a little beat up, and painted anvils are always suspect. a lot of times, the paint job was done to hide something like a crack or repair. looks like about 150 pounds? fisher maybe? are there numbers cast on the tops of the feet? is there an eagle cast into it on one side?..might be faint, but if it's there, it's fisher. they made a sh*t ton of em. what does it sound like when you tap it with a hammer? (do not strike the anvil with a hammer, they are both hardened steel, and can chip...that's what causes the edges to ding up like this one, and an anvil chip in the eye is not fun). fishers don't normally ring much...but neither does any anvil that has lost it's hardness do to a fire, or made out of sh*tty metal. how much of a rebound does it give to the hammer? if you have any large ball bearings, you can do a rebound test. with a 1/2" ball bearing, drop it from 10", you should get 80% or so rebound (8"). more info on that: http://www.anvilfire.com/index.php?body ... 20Hardness

i've got a couple of those. i use the big one all of the time for joinery work. has a good amount of weight to hold stuff down, and the shapes come in handy for rigging/propping freehand stuff together:

there is a little one made from mine track in my mini collection also...middle one on the far left:

If I had that out in front of my house Luke that. I would have to sit on the front porch with the boomstick. Scrappers would be all over that around here.

Good point. Nice doggy nice doggy!!

We had a forklift counter weight sitting outside our shop that went to a truck we were working on inside. You know the big chunk of iron on the back of the forklifts. Someone took it? I don't even know how they loaded it. :esurprised:

hah! i know of some fellers, if'n y'all catch'em at the right time o night with a couple/few 12 packs, will do just 'bout anything. they mus live'n yer holler.

i have a golf buddy that was the job site manager at a major east coast industrial/commercial construction company. one day he calls me up and asks me if i want some steel plates. two hours later, he shows up with his dodge dually 3500 LOADED with 1-1/2 x 12 x 36" plates...must have been 20 of em or so...a couple of were 2-1/2" thick. he said they were elevator testing weights. i can guarantee you that those bitches still sit where i put em ten years ago at my old shop!

if anyone in central MD is in need of such steel....

We have a nice scrap buyer here that will buy anything. Truthfully he ain't nice he's a real D!@%. Customer of ours. Anyway one of the local news channels went down to his place to investigate where all the stolen copper in the city was going. They couldn't see it all hidden behind the strategically placed piles of scrap. But they had him on camera asking him all kinds of questions. He was steady cussing them and telling them to leave. the whole time there was a pile of manhole covers in the background. That said property of Kansas City on them. I could read it on the TV. I would try to go down there and get copper but it gets thrown in the compactor as soon as its unloaded. That way its covered up and out of site.

thanks guys. yep, i have been drooling over this one for many, many years.

JD, if you are gonna get into damascus making, a hydraulic press is what most damascus makers use. this is a pic of mine.
Imagei get all of my damascus and mokume stock from full time makers lately and haven't messed with making any of my own a very long time. gonna have to start up again someday...it's just that all this copperworking and likkersmithing takes up my fun time!!!

You have some nice tools. I'm a much more shadetree kinda blacksmith. I already decided this knife will be made with some damascus stock. I'd love to learn to make my own, but I just don't have that kind of time or equipment. Maybe one day.

You got any good links for damascus?
