My friend who shutdown his restaurant because the pandemic situation gave me 30 half gallon ball masons and 24 pints all brand new. Plus a ton of sharpies, masking tape, and bar towels. Best deal i got all week. I hear theres a mason jar shortage right now nationally and havent been able to find any myself around the local grocers so im pretty stoked about that.

Jars are easier to find than replacement rings and lids but sounds like a good get!

Its canning season here, I tried to get some half gallon jars the other day, and evey place was wiped out. Three weeks earlier they were plentyful. My DIL has been advised to hoard all 1/2 gallon and 1 gallon mason jars that come into the use again store going forward until I tell her otherwise if she wants anymore SPD. ( I could also use another case of quart jars.) I have plenty of pints and half pints. If I run low on empties, I'll force feed everyone PB&J to free up some that are home to Blueberry jam.

Thinking about getting this to malt my grains. Not sure how it'd go, but it comes at a decent price!

If I was offered that at a decent price I'd grab it, especially if the motor still ran, which I doubt it will.

3 skull shaped bottles containing spicy powder for cooking . just wanted the bottles really , they were 50p each reduced from £6.99
planning to make traffic light coloured infusions to go in them . Damson can be red . limoncello for amber , not sure about green ,can only think of green skittles .I have a cherry log that I can make corks from to replace the plastic lids

and on the way back found some copper and brass pieces including a brass gate valve that were being thrown away . I like a good dumpster dive . got a working chop saw too

So the kids dropped by for a visit last night and brought me a few jars and half gallon growlers. But this was the gem of the bunch.

A 3 liter graduated flip top mason jar. A little PTFE tape and it's gonna make a fine aging jar.

I have quite a few lightning jars in various sizes. Personally I like to leave the seal off when aging in them.

So far I'm 50/50 on opinions regarding the seal.
I imagine climate plays a role as well. In some environments I imagine you'd lose too much to evaporation without the seal.

In my case no, I have greater loss from my barrel. I live in a fairly low temp high humidity environment but even when I leave them on a heater vent it doesn't lose too much. Of course your mileage may vary and what I view as acceptable loss you may not, so you would have to keep an eye on it and decide when you feel it was time to put a seal on.

The wisdom that comes from aging in a proper barrel is priceless.
Cranky you view the loss from unsealed jars to be acceptable because you have experienced the loss from a proper barrel.
You also know to view this as a good thing, because the alchemy that must happen requires that sacrifice.
