Picked up a 3/8" brass needle valve for a few dollars at a garage sale. Perfect for water control for my next reflux still experiment.

I bought an old rusty grain mill today for US$50.
Got it broken down and soaking in vinegar now. It's got a couple worts, but the cones are in great shape. Should be able to get it restored and functional for under $150 total out of pocket. This should make a fine corn grinder.

My small amount of backset is reserved for the next whiskey mash, otherwise I'd have use it.

Well, I thought I found a good deal.... I found some panela online for $1.87/LB with free shipping. I ordered 24 lbs to try it out. What I received was 22 lbs of "P.A.N. pre-cooked enriched white corn meal". I got a refund and they did not want the corn meal returned to them, so at least I got something that can be fermented. The same panela is listed at $3.54/LB now. Looks like panela rum is on hold.
Any thoughts on "enriched pre-cooked corn meal"?

Deplorable - nice score on the mill! Is that flywheel cut for a v-belt?

Enrichment is usually some B vitamins. So shouldn’t be any problems…

No. Too old for that. If I later decide to power it, I'll have to buy a fly wheel. I've got a 1hp electric motor that could run it.

This one is different.

My chore is making the bed.
Said to my supervisor (SWMBO) 'This sheepskin underlay has had it. Old. Never was much good,
held (poorly) by straps in the corner, etc.'

She ordered this you beaut new one. "Fitted" not straps, better made altogether.
So did the neighbour.

So I now have two (Queen bed size) sheepskins to keep the washes warm, maybe make a coat for the still...

No it is not confiscated. I have access to a bottle dumpster used by several different bars. Since I need to bottle 7-9 gallons of brandy, 15 gallons of cider, 10 gallons of that pink stuff and a few other things I have been raiding the bottle dumpster a lot lately looking for beer bottles that use crimp on caps and bottles with corks. It seems that occasionally when beer is at or near it's expiration date they are choosing to just toss it in the dumpster box and all unopened so I rescue it...just for the bottles of course... :D
Kareltje wrote: Fri Jul 23, 2021 4:01 pm What is Coors????
It's a fairly low alcohol (4.5%) American lager "beer" made with barley, hops and corn syrup. It's quite popular in certain crowds but I don't know anybody who drinks it. I do however know a guy with a still who is more than willing run off any kind of alcohol he can get for nothing

In a way they did. I need bottles, so it saves me the money for the bottles. The bottles are actually worth 5 or 10 cents in certain states so technically I could get paid to take them.
Saltbush Bill wrote: Fri Jul 23, 2021 4:21 pm The Tabasco was a bargain
You really can't go wrong with free unopened hot sauce. :D It's not even expired or nothing, not that Tabasco actually ever expires.

It's just a matter of being in the right place at the right time and willing to take advantage of it.

I got another 2 bottles of Tabasco today and could have gotten 3 more 12 packs of Coors light but would have had to climb into the dumpster to get them. I'm not real crazy about the idea of climbing in there with all that broken glass for 3.3 gallons of crappy 4.2% beer. I might feel differently tomorrow

Necessity is the mother of all inventions, if they are in the 1/2 case bottles you can probably grab them with a simple hook on SBB’s long handled tool.

I'd be willing to bet laziness has led to more inventions than necessity.
