Actually here’s a better perspective with regular beer steins beside it.
Numerous 57L kegs, some propane, one 220v electric with stilldragon controller. Keggle for all-Grain, two pot still tops for whisky, a 3" reflux with deflag for vodka. Coming up, a 4" perf plate column. Life is short, make whisky and drag race!

GB,
Nice! 5L pils stein, I brought some of the smaller .5 L and 1.0L back home. I mostly stuck with drinking the weizen and the boch beer. Pils was always too bitter for me. I've probably misspelled all of that. My wife and I enjoyed our time in Europe. My son was actually born in the Bamberg Klinikum, not the military hospital in Nuremberg, back in '89.

Re: The liar's bench
Cool, German lagers ruined beer for me. Came back to Canada and couldn’t stand the garbage made here. Went all over London trying beers in the pubs.. yuk... nope... man these suck.. hey there’s a lowenbrau, hey that’s good?? That’s when I realized I like lagers and don’t like ales.
Stopped drinking beer from 93-2018. Closest thing I’ve found is Sleamans original lager. Not perfect but pretty damn close.

Oh last time in Germany was Lahr from 90-93 at 4CER. (Combat engineer regiment) I was in Baden Baden before that.
You ever exercise in Hohenfelts? Did a lot of fibua training there and of course tank exercises with the leopards/Abrams.

Yep, been to hohenfells, graffenweir, wilflecken and others way too many times. We left in '91 and came back to the states. I was at 1/52inf and 7/6 inf. At panzer kaserne, bamberg.
I know exactly what you mean. I dont like pils or lagers. Once or twice a year the wife will get me a bit of a hefeweizen made in a microbrewery in Tennessee. But it usually takes me 6 months to a year to drink them. I'd rather have my own likker, I guess.

Graf!! Holy, forgot about there and wilflecken!
Was in bamberg a couple times but just with the wife traveling. ( girlfriend at the time)
Ha, good memories. You ever make it to the Black Forest and the house of a thousand clocks?
Just got back from a run on the trails, wife got her truck stuck but before I could throw a tow strap on she got out. She’s getting better, lol.
Sitting back now having a couple more drinks while the grilled cheese cooks. ( yeah it’s 11pm but this will tide us over if we go back out, lol. Snowing like a bastard here, gotta love snowwheeling)

my brother lived about a block away and we all got drunk up there one night and buddy left to crash at my place cause he was wayyy too drunk. i lived at the end of a cul de sac with identical shoebox two stories...
i get home and don't think nothing of nobody on my couch.
the next morning while making some eggs, buddy comes stumbling in still pissed...
he woke up (spent the night) on the landing, halfway up my next door neighbors stairs. Luckily he was the first one up in that house and stumbled outside to get his bearings...
I finally quit drinking for good.

Yep, did a little bit of drinking there myself. Discovered there are beers I have NO desire to ever taste again. EKU 28, comes to mind as top of that list. We used to tell new guys that it had 3 tastes, 1. Beer taste 2. Likker taste 3. After taste. That stuff was nasty. Not sure why we drank so much of it.

Re: The liar's bench
So it’s been snowing on and off for 3 days now and we lost cable and internet but still have power. Heading out the lake road I see the vans on the side of the road and guys up on the poles. I slowed down with the window open and called out “big tree got both of you out here eh”?
One called back saying they’ve been here since daybreak. I called good luck and started to leave. The cable guy called out “what time is it anyway “?
I said “sometime between noon and 5pm” and kept going.
See how he likes it.

Re: The liar's bench
I was looking at a buddies 62 galaxie wagon he just picked up. Got it from somewhere in the states and had it shipped up. Really nice shape, pretty much all original. His grandkid was out looking at it too, he says”where’s the cup holders”? I said “back in our days, you held your beer between your knees when you drove”. He looked at his grandfather “is that true grampy”?
“Oh yeah, and everybody had to smoke when you were driving too, look at all the ashtrays”
I laughed to myself as the kid counted them off.
8 ashtrays!! One in each door, one center of dash and centre of front seat for the middle person in the back seat and two on the outsides of the 3rd bench that faced backwards.
No cup holders! Lol!
Funny how society has changed. I remember seeing a late 50’s Chrysler imperial with a holder for a liquor bottle and two glasses on the inside of the glovebox door. From the factory and labeled as such.
Edit: just tried to find a picture of the Chrysler and couldn’t find it, but I did find a 57 Cadillac had a “minibar” option as well. (As did Jaguar)

Wing windows were a thing . Vacuum in a moving vehicle made the environment tolerable and sucked out tobacco smoke and ashes from a cigarette . Induction coil heaters for lighting cigs were standard both front and back . Replacements were 'on the rack' available in the parts stores .
Finest feature I found in the autos of the time were powered fold down seats that accommodated fornication .

Re: The liar's bench
When vehicles were made of metal and a fender bender only bent the fender. Now cars are made of plastic, and if someone just bumps your rear end, it will damn near total a new car. And pickup trucks were actually used to haul stuff. Now, very few 4x4s ever been dirty or off the road. Me and the wife been looking at newer (used not new) trucks. Nope, ain't paying that. My problem is I dont need or want these jacked up trucks you have to use a ladder to get in. Just finding a plain old work truck, that can handle the hills and old roads here in Appalachia is a somewhat difficult thing. The search continues...

Gotta love ol TB . Always looking for the finer points in a fine automobile! Better be careful you don't accidentally kick her into neutral when that seat is reclined. I still drive my old truck. It has wind up windows, a manual transmission so none of these young folks can drive it and a AM/FM radio with cassette player. I went to the doctor the other day and they had free valet parking. The guy jumped in and I saw the deer in the headlights look. He asked me what shifter to use . So I had to explain to him . This is the shifter , this one here is for 4WD and this one is high and low range. Better yet I think I will just park it myself. Didn't want him to fry the clutch.

Re: The liar's bench
Looked at some pics of 60s Chevy and ford trucks. The 64 ford I had had 3 on the tree, and most of the pickups I remember was the same. A couple had been modified with a 4 on the floor. Our 1 ton international had a 4 speed with a 2 speed hi/lo tranny. All us kids were driving as soon as we were big enough to see over the dashboard., everybody helped in the hay and tobacco fields. Just the way it was.

Re: The liar's bench
But what got me was most of the old trucks had been converted to automatic tranny...and the prices they was asking was unbelievable. And I completely understand TBs concerns,... let's just say that the floorboards in a 70s VW ain't very strong.

Re: The liar's bench
My brother had an old Vanguard car, maybe it was in the seventies and the car was old then.
The steering wheel gear change was knackered.
So he brazed a rod to each of the butterflies on the gearbox.
They poked up through the floor; so when they were both in the middle it was in neutral.
If I remember right;
Left stick up was reverse.
left stick down was first.
from first to second, left stick to the middle, right stick up.
from second to third, right stick down.
Worked fine.
Geoff

Re: The liar's bench
I reckon I'll be hitten the scrapyarda in a couple months, scrounging the parts to build a reflux still. Started that route a few years ago, got sidetracked by life and didnt finish, yet. Bout time to finish that endeavor. See just how cheap I can build it. Should be interesting. Might end up being a nonworking Franken still that wont hit 50%, but maybe I'll learn something. And I'm really looking at going electric on my old pot and brandy setups. I dont think I'll be able to scrounge up those parts...but well see.

Luck in your endeavor . I've been so happy with my pot/thumper rig that I have had no desire to change . Never stood in the way of someone that want's to try a different track .

Re: The liar's bench
Ain't planning on scrapping the pot, thump or even the brandy head. Lol...I dont like vodka or neutrals. But, another tool, (that I actually learn to use) in my toolbox, should be a good thing. Started out to do this a few years ago, and some stuff came about that put a temporary halt to it. Hell, both of my outfits have been setting in mothballs for a few years because of the stuff.
It took me a bunch of years just to switch from wood fired to propane. I dont know why either. Once I switched I realized I like propane cooking and it didnt to change the flavor of my likker. Now, with building the shop/still house I'm looking at switching to electric on the new still. I'll keep the old ones on propane and just set outside in the yard, under a tree. I made some pot stilled vodka a few years ago. Used googes recipe, but didnt have kale, I used mustard and turnip greens instead. The buddy I made it for still crows about it. Says it's the best likker he ever had. He always asks about the recipe, so I told him...he read it and said, if I didnt want to give away my recipe, just say so. Still chuckle about that.

Damn TB...wish I would of logged on again last night before going to bed!
Got up to a bad headache and a goose egg on my forehead?
Looked in the mirror and it says "forged in Detroit" in the goose egg?
She whacked me with a cast iron frying pan when I was sleeping!
Came downstairs and she going like a whirlwind in the kitchen, pots on for my tea...(well that ain't normal)
She yells "how many tea spoons in a tablespoon "??!!
I said "three why"?
"Damn it, I shouldn't of had a puff before looking at the recipe"!
Turns out she felt guilty of whacking me and was up a few hours before me. "Smoke" is legal here and while I have no use for any of it, she does. She's now changing the recipe for fajitas from 12 to 37 people... I told her a little too much onion and garlic powder is fine, just keep making it for the 12 of us. She just came in the sunroom proud as a peacock because we have enough fajita powder for 74 servings because she made another mistake but adjusted the rest of the recipe again! Great big glass bowl 3/4 full of powder she's mixing up....holy poo, sat night should be interesting....

Re: The liar's bench
Speaking of nothing at all really, the problem with buying a used house...
About a week ago started smelling sewage in the basement. Went through all the usual, checked p traps, separated rooms by closing the doors and finding the smell is in the rec room. Buddy said septic is full, it's backing up. Well it's not backing up and besides, it's a closed system, I could run propane through it and still shouldn't be able to smell it if the system is closed. Nope, tanks full. Ok, dug up the tank, checked, "shitters full".
Fine, called in the pump truck. Smell was gone for a day...then it's back. WTF!!!
Must have a broken line, pulled the clean out plug and there is the septic smell, the line runs 12' out through the wall to the tank. Got my extended pole and rammed it down to see if there is a blockage before the tank...nope.
Dug up the whole line and found a broke connection about 6' from the house. Fixed that, filled in the hole. (All by hand of course).
Next day..it's even worse!!!
Smell right by the pipe where it goes into the Sheetrock and I can smell sewage around the outside of the pipe.
Dug up the line by the house thinking maybe the pipe isn't sealed to the concrete and the smell of the sewage is coming in around the pipe.
Couple cracks so I picked it all out. In the hole outside there is no smell, but in the basement the air blowing in smelling like sewage. Must be the 3" pipe, elbow, y pipe, something is cracked going through the wall were I can't see it. Frig it, I'll cut it all out and replace the whole works and be done of it!
I noticed there's a 2" leading off the 3", so I feel in behind the sheet rock and feel dampness! Crap! Cut some more sheet rock back and reach..I feel a y pipe with...my finger went in the end of a pipe!?!?
Cut more sheet rock back and here's a y pipe that had one pipe cut off and a RAG STUCK IN THE HOLE!!!
Got a cap and plugged that, cleaned up some insulation that was contaminated.
Left the wall open for a day to air out and make sure that's it.
Having a bunch of people over Saturday and need the smell gone and have other stuff to do to prepare so I just gummed the wall up and left it. Didn't even sand it, just mud and hung some crap in the way.

Re: The liar's bench
Here's the wall all hacked up. It goes another 8' to the right but I can't resize it to all fit in. Regardless, you get the point.
Three days+ of digging in shit with my hands.
I said to the wife "this is why guys get an extra dollar an hour"
She wasn't amused but she admitted she wouldn't of done it either.
Life goes on......

No shit!
Just under the motor home wiring in a new charger so it’ll charge the batteries whenever I’m hooked to shore power. Working away... why do I still smell sewage!?!?!?
Then I realized the dump valve which is open for the winter was 5’ away! Lol!
Got that stink in my smell memory now...
