Odin wrote: ...Whiskey ain't whiskey if it isn't aged on wood.
(Reference: http://homedistiller.org/forum/viewtopi ... 4#p7086927)

Innocuous statement? Common sense? This statement -as simple as it is- holds great importance to me. And ironically it's importance was learned from Odin's own Cornflake Whiskey.

Cornflake was the first recipe I made after running aground on the Home Distiller shores back in June or July. I had just dumped turbo yeast for good and I held great hope for a decent recipe.
Strictly out of ignorance and ruined taste buds, I hated Cornflake Whiskey white! I kept it to myself and poured the finished concoction into a barrel if for nothing more than to keep the barrel hydrated.
But I proudly told my closest friends "I made whiskey!" even though I didn't believe it myself.

There it sat. Improving. Despite my scorn and ignorance. Just recently (since joining here last month) I wanted that barrel real estate for my newly distilled Honey Bear Bourbon.
Thank goodness I tasted the Cornflake before just dumping it! It turned into whiskey!

That was an a-HAH! moment. There was some leftover white, so I compared. Holy hell!

This stumble into perfection has a side benefit. When I want to project how a white Honey Bear or Sundae Chocolate Bourbon will age into the future, I taste the white Cornflake and chase it with the barrel Cornflake and note the difference.
You veterans may not give much thought to "Whiskey ain't whiskey if it isn't aged on wood" but it's Notable and Quotable to me.
