Happy Birthday Odin! Toasting you right now with an easy gin and tonic!
Re: Happy Birthday Odin
Thanks guys! Much appreciated! Yes, it was a great day. Bushman nailed it, stating he wishes me I could spent time with family & friends. I could, but there was some work to do too. Nice work though, so not complaining.
I woke up at 5h30, hit the showers, dived into my car, and - slowly because of slipery roads - drove to Drenthe, in the North East of the Netherlands. Drenthsche Schans had bought on of my stills and I had promissed to help him with assembly, testing and the first run.
Remco, Gert and I started assembly at 8h15 and followed the test protocols like two hours later. Everything was fine. We then filled the boiler with a (very) low ABV beer and started her up ... only to have the fuses blow out after a few minutes! These are the moments ... you do not want as a still maker. Especially not on your birthday! Luckily we found out the wrongly installed 16 amps circuit could be easily replaced by the much needed 40 amps circuit and breaker. And after that we did a first run, cleaning out the rig and training Gert and Remco on how to use it. Funny thing always is, that only around 50% of the talks are about the rig and how to use it to its maximum potential. It is always like this that at least 50% of our time is spent talking about the actual process. From grain to milling, from mashing to fermentation, etc. Something I love to do.
Gert is a farmer with some 120 hectares of his own barley. He makes beer, gave me a crate for my birthday (Drenthsche Schans Beer), and he waved me off. He will use the rig to make a single malt. From grain to glass.
The way back was okay. No more icy roads and a Porsche Panamera Turbo S, that passed me by, provided a challenge I just had to take up ... I was home at around 4 pm. Just in time to help with the last preparations for my birthday party.
I got lots of chocolates from the kids. And shot glasses. A shawl. A sort of cowboy bag to help me with my travels abroad. A whiskey glass with "Odin" engraved, books, some cigars and a bottle of wine. During the party we dived into Gert's beer and liked it. I hit the sack at half past two in the morning. Pretty drunk! Next morning (today) I had to get out at 8 again to take my middle daughter to a national soccer team training. Man, that was a challenge!
Later this week I am off to Australia to open up a distillery. After that it is onwards to Canada. And from there to the USA. I guess I won't be that much in contact until April 7th, when we are back in the Netherlands ...
Regards, Odin.
