Biology experiment for my kid.

Little or nothing to do with distillation.

Biology experiment for my kid.

Post by pfshine »

So I'm doing school stuff with my daughter (she's 4) and got to biology. So I did the old blow up a balloon with yeast deal. We mixed some sugar pumpkin pie mix for nutrients (had some left over) and yeast. The balloon started to inflate but had a small leak at the seal, didn't really matter though the point was made and experiment was a success. Here is the funny part, I looked at it today and the balloon is reverse inflated in the bottle. It seems that it cooled off after fermentation and the yeast bed is absorbing a ton of gas.

Assuming the gas trapped in initially was CO2 - whatever metabolic process is happening there is re-absorbing the CO2. I wonder if it's a bacterial take-over.
