I always thought 'drunk as the lord' was a particularly fun phrase, and never understood the origin. I equated lord with the religious meaning, and it didn't make sense. Later I learned it was nobility. That makes more sense, but I don't like the phrase as much.

Well you may be correct in your original assumption bilgriss - as i remember from my venture into "Religion" as a kid, one of the triumverate was pretty adept in the old "Water into wine" Dept 8)

Three sheets in the wind;
Google says;

'...sheets aren't sails, as landlubbers might expect, but ropes (or occasionally, chains). These are fixed to the lower corners of sails, to hold them in place. If three sheets are loose and blowing about in the wind then the sails will flap and the boat will lurch about like a drunken sailor.'

I'd say the politically incorrect term would be spazzed, monged, cabbaged etc. rather than spastic, merely for the reason that (at least back in my days at school) a spastic was a derogatory term for someone who was stupid/idiotic although in it's correct usage it would be referring to cerebral palsy.. SCOPE (a British charity) used to be called The Spastics Society.

from google;

British Dictionary definitions for flog
flog
verb flogs, flogging or flogged
(tr) to beat harshly, esp with a whip, strap, etc
(tr) British slang to sell
(intr) (of a sail) to flap noisily in the wind
(intr) to make progress by painful work

:lol: Sorry, ShineOn! Hope it wasn't your best butter rum! That was my wife's favorite description of me during our early years when I had been seriously imbibing.
