Rum & Art

Post by RumForestRum »

There is art in making great rum, i suppose. But there are more ways in which rum and art go together.

Famous cubist paintings containing a references to rum are made by Dali, Braque, Gris and Metzinger:

https://www.tate.org.uk/art/artworks/gr ... per-t06808" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;" rel="nofollow
https://www.wikiart.org/en/georges-braq ... piece-1911" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;" rel="nofollow
https://www.wikiart.org/en/jean-metzing ... f-rum-1917" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;" rel="nofollow
What could be the reason Cubists seem to love their rum?

Another famous combination is rum and dub/reggae from Jamaica. Jamaica is sometimes even branded a the place of rum and reggae, right? A nice example reggae song about rum is 'rum tree' by the radicals (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=36VRDSKVef8" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;" rel="nofollow, maybe a 'rum tree' would be a nice metaphor for the distilling setup?) but there are countless other songs. I also like how Lee Perry used it in his studio (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sAKHA1QbIpg" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;" rel="nofollow).

It makes me wonder: what art goes together well with rum? and what rum goes together well with art?

My interest comes from enjoying rum and art myself, and just curiosity regarding the combination. I would be very interested in putting together some historical information, but also personal experiences and anecdotes on this topic!

Cubism got its start in Europe. Rum don't seem a likely tipple for that bunch, but I guess it is what it is. Now them Fauvists are a different story. Most of em were late 19th centry impressionists who stained their brains with absinthe. Seems like a natral pregressun. Then theres them ab-expressionists who would drink most anything. Like Jackson Pollock who drank most of his life and left life a drunkard takin a innocent woman with him. Drinkin and drivin don't mix as they say.

Stilling and music blend so naturally, and there has been studies on yeast and music (or more like vibrations). My best rum ferments have had the radicals playing in the background, don't try this with bourbon, instead a little Arthur Smith goes a long way. Oh I don't make scotch because of the damn pipes!

No that dosen't work for me, that song still has those droning notes that would make me want to drain the ferment.

What I really enjoy while I'm out in the shed is old Pink Floyd and Led Zeppelin - just really sets the mood for me.
