Re: COVID-19 party
When dealing with my daughters, I've been practicing social distancing
The little kids and toddler are easy, Apply the same training rules used for horses and puppies.
In other words, I'm boss and if they don't behave I'll growl at them.
What I don't understand is their little angels, while I'm watching them
But the moment momma and daddy show up, all hell breaks loose.

Re: COVID-19 party
My neighbour's kids were like that. He was home in time to look after the kids when they got home from school and the kids were fine, you wouldn't know they were there unless they were laughing or playing noisy games. Mom gets home at five and the caterwauling starts before she gets into the house.
Those kids have become fine adults.

Re: COVID-19 party
Just guessing, I'd say
A large majority of kids turn out to be "good" adults.
Many of them in spite of how poorly they were raised.
It always amazes me
When I see the emotions flash across a toddlers face and body as they see, taste or hear something new.
And Yes I'm the feller that will give a baby a slice of lemon

The grey and black water holding tanks on one of the youngins travel trailer was full
So We built a wooden box on skids to drain the tanks in and drag out to the pasture.
I can't smell much anymore, but every one else scattered and started making puking faces
My biggest fear was the old dog would go to the were it was dumped and decide to go belly up and waller around in it

Knock on wood
Every bodies still alive and kicking.
Something that amazes me, when I ask one of the kids what a particular weed, bush, tree, bug or critter is.
They will drag out a smart phone and in a couple minutes give me an education.
Their starting with an advantage I never had.

It's been a while since I've been on the air.stillanoob wrote: ↑Sun Mar 22, 2020 7:55 am Me and all my ham radio buddies are had a party last night... On the air! Pretty funny and we were at least pushing up on what the FCC thinks is acceptable.
Sounds like it's time to string up some wire in the trees
And fire up the Kenwood 820.

I got my license last week. All green and wet behind the ears in ham world. And I am really starting to see what an expensive hobby this radio thing can be. Gawking at the used gear websites and trying to find anything I can afford.
Always impatient. But learning.

It doesn't have to be expensive
You might try googling QRZ and checking out the used gear for sale.

Re: COVID-19 party
Oh, I've got uhf/vhf equipment enough for local chatter. Gotta give it to the chinese, they churn out an awful lot of passable quality but very cheap gear. Got myself a QYT KT-7900D and a Baojie bj-9900 together with a bunch of UV5R's and they're simpel but functional little radios. But a proper HAM rig with a decent HF antenna will easily run you out a 1000USD even on the cheap. And I've been known for my "when we're at it...." attitude to equipment.
And, location. Up in the frozen northern Europe it costs to get things shipped my way.

I'm cheap, so a $250 or less used rig with homebrew antennas works for merubelstrudel wrote: ↑Wed Apr 01, 2020 3:21 am a proper HAM rig with a decent HF antenna will easily run you out a 1000USD even on the cheap
Amateur radio is kinda like fishing.
You can spend massive amounts of money or you can dig for worms
Speaking of which, the kids have been having a blast picking up nightcrawlers this dark rainy night.
Recon I'll have to take them fishing tomorrow.

Hey , Shady and Rubel .
Used to be a ZL3Txx back a long many years ago .
The T call was the NewZealand Technical licence. We could do UHF and VHF but had to do the Morse test to go on HF . My brain just couldn’t do Morse . Was way more interested in getting my Commodore 64 to control my tracking 2M/ 70cm Amsat ( think thats what they called it ) Satellite tracking stack .
LoL still got a couple of Tip Rat HF radios but rarely switch them on these days.
I kinda miss those old days .

The reason I got my license now is that they ditched the morse requirement. I have a perpetual A license now, without morse.
That rig you got there Yummy is what I have been looking for. But even old rigs from the 80s and before cost a lot of dineros around here. It is not really anything to get below 500 USD eqv. Or at least nowadays. We used to be able to buy a dollar for 7NOK a few years back. Now we have to pay 11NOK for the same dollar. And that makes importing stuff much much less cheap than it used to be.
I am tempted to get one of these tiny chinese Xiegu G90's though. Really nifty digital HF radios.

It killed more of the young and healthy".
That is the one that killed my father's dad.
Just three weeks before the death of his son, Dad's older brother, in the war in France.
So at least the old man never knew about that.
He was a bit older than many who died then, 58 years old.
Dad was in his late teens so I never knew his father.
Australia seems to be well managed in the current crisis. Federal and state leaders forming a 'war cabinet', of all political persuasions.
Strict social isolation, not many deaths and lots of them people returning from cruises or others infected by them.
People are still dying but the increase in the number of deaths has dropped dramatically.
And what appears to be good economic measures are in place to assist those losing jobs and so on,
and keep the economy from collapsing so we will be better off, after.
Please take care.

In the business world, there's definitely going to be changes.
I live in a rural area where farming is the main industry.
It's spring and their all chomping at the bit to get started
For now, I plan on staying hunkered down with kinfolks
And getting ready to grow enough grub

Getting back to the peasant economy, shady!
Grow your own grains; cracked wheat makes great porridge and you can make your own spirits and beer.
Mill the grain and bake your own bread.
Grow your own veg. and fruit and make your own wine.
Keep animals for meat and milk and cream and cheese.
Lots of people here have done these things.

I've been doing that for years
Now every bodies back on the farm and doing it too.
Spring is the best time of the year, good weather is starting and the bugs aren't out yet.
The kids are worn out and sound asleep.
Earlier they were so noisy, it made silence want to scream and run away in terror.
Just got done sitting on the back porch with my wife, catching a buzz, talking and watching the stars.
It's been a good day, tomorrow could be even better

WW1 and the 1918ish flu pandemic was a crazy time.
He almost died in both of them.

Re: COVID-19 party
Dangit, I can't believe I missed the ham radio chatter in this thread! We have been having a nightly "virus net" on VHF and lots of folks we don't usually hear from have been coming out of the woods and showing up. Real nice to hear about everyone's day and how they are getting by. And several of the older hams have been getting groceries and stuff from us young uns. PLus there has been stuff like seed and yeast sharing for stuff that is hard to get at the moment.
Rubel, my best advice is to connect with hams in your area when all of this blows over and get to know them. There is always somebody with a rig they would sell if they know you and believe you will really get on the air. Around here (in the middle of nowhere) you could get a rig close to free or for $100. We have a weekly swap net on our linked repeater system the covers most of the county and parts of a couple of others. There is also a 40 meter swap net. See if you can find one near you. The HF swap net you could listen to on a web SDR. The deals are out there.
Here at the ranch, life is pretty much unchanged. Been doing lots of work in the garden but I would have been anyway. Peach set looks good and the plums too. It will be a few weeks before we know about the cherries. Thinned the blackberry patch a couple weeks ago, going to do some mowing and thin the raspberries today. Peas are reaching for the sky. Apples are starting to bloom. The fly in the ointment for me is I can't take the van I bought a couple of months ago camping. I need to get away from the hustle and bustle of living in the middle of nowhere!
Forgot to add: Should be running a batch of sugar wash tomorrow and starting my first batch of sweet feed today.

Ok, glad to hear. It's a bizarre situation, generally speaking. Where I am at, the product is in great demand (meat for the people's freezer) and practically beating them away with a stick; there is only so much to go around, thats the way nature works.
Much obliged
